As his forces walked home from the Battle of New Orleans he noticed that the officers were riding their horses and the wounded men were walking. He directed the officers to put the wounded men on the horses and he dismounted and put a wounded man on his horse. As they walked on a soldier approached Jackson and offered a walking stick to assist his travels. I’m sure you can guess what type of tree the walking stick was from. That and the fact that he was hard as hickory made sure that the name stuck.
Jackson was a Bad Ass. Some guy took a shot at him and the guns failed to fire. Jackson took to beating him with his walking stick until he was pulled off.
