But Republicans lack sufficient leverage to wrest any serious concessions — that was a key reason House Speaker John Boehner let the House vote Tuesday to raise the debt limit. Better to take the lumps and move on than to prolong the agony and lose anyway.

Can someone please explain to me how the Republicans "lack sufficient leverage when they control the House and the filibuster in the Senate.

The GOP is divided. Leadership is totally unwilling to herd the cats in line and substantively engage the Dems. The Dems use their propagandists in the MSM and progressive Republicans to blunt the conservative agenda.

The Dem game plan since the day after they won in 2012 was to divide the GOP and marginalize the TEA party message. Progressive stooges like Peter King and John McCain have happily played their part for Team Dem.

Meanwhile Boehner & McConnell have shown no interest in substantively engaging the Dems. They have intentionally left the party with little leverage by design because their game plan is always to tip toe to the next election.
