The Coward’s Conundrum
redstate.com ^ | 2/15/14 | Erick Erickson

Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn say they put the country first. The debt ceiling needed to be raised. Ted Cruz opposed raising it. So McConnell and Cornyn voted to shut down Ted Cruz. They voted to cut off debate on raising the debt ceiling so that it could be raised.

McConnell and Cornyn have both been very clear about this. John Cornyn told the Austin American-Statesman

“I think it would have been bad for the economy, bad for the American people, and I don’t think it would have been good politics either.”

Mitch McConnell declared it his job to protect the country.

Got that? Had the debt ceiling not been raised it would be “bad for the economy” and “bad for the American people” and the Senate must “protect the country where” it can.

So . . . um . . . if the debt ceiling needed to be raised for the country, the economy, and the people, why did John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell vote against raising the debt ceiling?

They both criticized Ted Cruz for wanting to block raising the debt ceiling, but they voted with Ted Cruz against raising the debt ceiling.

Whaaa…?!?!?!

Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn are cowards. They were in a conundrum. Their constituents did not want the debt ceiling raised. But McConnell and Cornyn wanted the debt ceiling raised. So they shut down Ted Cruz’s filibuster knowing the Democrats would raise the debt ceiling without their votes. They, like their House counterparts, enabled this to happen.

In all their moral preening about what’s good for the country and economy, they were too chicken to actually vote their conscience — they were too chicken to do what they thought was right.

On the backstabbers McConnell and Cornyn:

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious.
But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly.
But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself.
For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.
He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist.
A murderer is less to be feared."

Why did it take McConnell and Cornyn 45 minutes to do it for the country?

Because they were trying to find the GOP sucker who would be the 60th
vote. In addition, McConnell asked Reed that the voting rules be changed.

McConnell is no Patriot.

'Coward' is the perfect word to describe it.

After all, what they did was first described by J F'ng Kerry ... "I voted for it before I voted against it".

Another DC Beltway cocktail circuit pass has been re-validated. Meanwhile, back in the land of the great unwashed....TEA is brewing.

There is no Democrat party or Republican party. There is only the Re-election party. And they are all card carrying members.

And, amazingly, they were praised for their “courage” by no less than Quin Hilyer over at National Review.

I don’t get it, on this they cave to the Dems, but on the extension of the unemployment they hold the line.

Way to make ordinary people feel like you care about them, not.

I think it is a stretch to assume conscience had anything to do with McConnell's & Cornyn voting, but rather everything to do with what is right for them, not America. Clearly, they voted both ways, so which vote was conscientious & which was not?

The Senate and House have already approved spending that would take the debt over the limit, so if they didn’t allow the debt limit to be raised, then Obama & Co. would arrange things so all the visible spending that would inconvenience voters would get cut.

McConnell & Co. know they would lose that argument in the Fascist media and probably not be re-elected.

And that is the real deal.

Can anyone save America now?

I guess it all boils down to uninformed Repubican promary voters, who repeatedly make wrong choices.

I’m afraid though that the people of TX and KY haven’t a clue as to what happened with their two illustrious senators.
