I remember Belanger. His lifetime average of .228 wasn’t so bad for a shortstop of that era. Oyler? I think his lifetime was about .175, still roughly 40 points higher than that 1968 year when the Tigers went all the way.
The only shortstop I remember who went from a lousy hitter to a good one was Omar Vizquel. Great on defense, terrible hitter until he came to Cleveland.
Belanger had 2 seasons over 270 which raised his anemic avg to the paltry 228 lifetime.
Loved him though.
