Republicans in the Senate are struggling to come up with the five votes they'd need to ensure passage on Wednesday of a House bill raising the debt ceiling.
The measure is likely to win support from the upper chamber's 53 Democrats and the two Independents that caucus with Democrats.
But only one Republican, Sen. Mark Kirk (Ill.), has so far said he would back the bill.
The measure needs 60 votes because Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is filibustering the bill over the lack of spending reforms attached to it.
Kirk told The Hill the vote would be close.
I think its narrow," he said.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) is expected to vote yes but told The Hill she was not prepared to announce her position on Wednesday morning.

Cornball will find the votes somehow, but his constituents will never understand his treachery.
The 5 year long, lopsided power struggle continues on the now shredded Congressional Field of Battle in the District of Corruption, along the muddy banks of De Nile River.
The simple goal of the much-praised Left Team, also called Democrats, as stated by their team captain B. Hussein Soetoro-Obama is to Fundamentally change the United States of America.
The multiple, and very complex goals of the Right Team, as yet unstated but consistently acted out by Special Wrongway RINO Defense Squad Co- Captains John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Kevin McCarthy and Pete Roskam is to DO NOTHING that will irritate the Left Team.
The Right Team is also known by the name Republicans, a nostalgic name from a long-past time when there was Liberty and Justice for all.
The Left Team has a single Offense Squad with All Democrat Stars from many Schools of Higher Government Learning, to name just a few:
* Department of Gestapo Justice, (DOGJ);
* National Spy On U., (NSOU);
* Interrogate Ream Sue U., (IRSU)
* Reid Barrycade Senate Universal, (RBSU).
The Left Team always runs down the Congressional Field of Battle together, and has been admiringly nicknamed District of Corruption, United.
The Right Team has never allowed the many Constitutional Offense Squads onto the Congressional Field of Battle, due to well-timed and strongly worded objections from many RINO luminaries such as Loser Emeritus, Wacko Birds McCain.
After a recent weekend, group-hug, bonding session, many caucus meetings, and private deal-making, Lead Co-Captain John Boehner picked up the ball yesterday and ran down the Congressional Field of Battle to score a goal for the Left Team.
Thanks to the RINO Defensive actions of Wrongway Boehner and his gang of 27, an additional 1 to 4, (nobody is really sure), TRILLION dollars will be added to the National Poverty Debt Game Clock.
Co-Captain Wrongway Boehner was assisted by 27 Members of the Special Wrongway RINO Defense Squad.
Needless to say, Wrongway Boehner and his gang of 27 made no contact with any of the Left Team Members.
Time will tell if donations to the Special Wrongway RINO Defense Squad, (SWRDS), will increase or decrease before the Championship Game in November, 2014.
He's been there about as long as McC, and people in KY are so uninformed that don't know either of their records.
“Where in the article does it say Cornyn is whipping for the Dems?”
The title of the article is “GOP struggles to fine “yes” votes” Cornyn is the whip, in that position he is the one who gets the votes.
While it’s possible that somebody like McCain is traveling around the floor trying to convince people, we all know it’s Cornyn.
Cornyn, McCain, Collins, Kirk, and Ayotte would be my guess.
Who could possibly vote for Cornyn in the primary?
Do they allow Dems to vote in the Republican primary in Texas? (That is the only way Cornyn could win it.)
The long-time pro-lifer Christopher Smith votes liberal on economic matters in line with thinking in Trenton.
Pryor is voting no, so the GOP has to come up with six votes to help Reid.
Yes, a Democrat can vote in a Republican primary in TX, but if he does: (1) He cannot vote in the companion Democrat primary or Democrat runoff, (2) He officially remains a Republican for a two-year period; cannot change registration until next primary in March 2016.
There is no shame left in the USA though.
Cornball has probably 65 percent in the bag right now thanks to establishment Republican voters and those who simply oval in familiar names.
People in TX don’t know it, but Cornball may be a “closeted Democrat” after all these years.
go Ted!
Hey, I just thought of something; those two clowns are from neighboring states.
Looks like they are voting for cloture on the bill now, atleast that is what the Cspan live feed says.
