I thought the reason that big supermarkets didn’t locate in the ‘hood was because of crime, robbery and shoplifting.

That, too. But if the locals really wanted fresh spinach, it would be carried in the 7-11 next to the Ding Dongs.

That’s true; supermarkets are very low margin businesses, and fresh produce is the lowest-margin product they sell. What supermarkets there are in high-crime areas literally can’t afford to waste shelf space on produce.
