I’ve been to the Soviet Union once, and the Russian Federation several times. Americans, typically from wealthy backgrounds, whined the most about conditions. Those conditions were most similar to those found on US military bases in the 1950s, although not as well maintained or freshly painted.

In short, it is primitive compared to, say, Houston. It is better than much of Detroit.
