President Obama said he no doubt wanted to make clear to Russia that the United States doesnt accept discrimination by sending gay athletes to the Olympics.
Obama sent hockey player Caitlin Kaho and figure skater Brian Boitano to represent the U.S. delegation--both are openly gay.
There is no doubt we wanted to make it very clear that we do not abide by discrimination in anything, including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and one of the wonderful things about the Olympics is that you are judged by your merit, Obama said in an interview with Bob Costas on Thursday.
The Obama administration has warned Americans who will be in Sochi to be aware of Russias law banning propaganda that promotes homosexuality.
An excerpt of Obamas interview with NBC News was broadcast Thursday evening, and the full interview will air Friday at 8 p.m.
Costas asked how satisfied Obama is with the level of cooperation between Russian and American intelligence in keeping the Olympic games safe.
Well, I think the Russians have an enormous stake, obviously, in preventing any kind of terrorist act or violence at these venues. They have put a lot of resources into it, Obama said. Were in constant communications with them, both at the law enforcement level, at the military level, at the intelligence levels, and its not untypical of every Olympics, whether its in Canada or China or anyplace else. We are consistently working with them to make sure that not only our athletes are safe, but everyone whos attending these Games are safe.
Asked if he would call his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin icy, Obama demurred.
I wouldnt call it icy, he said, adding that Putin has always treated him with the "utmost respect."

I can see why he needs to send a message. I remember when Brian Boitano was excluded from the Olympics because of his sexual preference. It was totally unfair. Oh, wait...
"Yoo-hoo... Mr Pootie..."
What, an executive order?
Ha, ha! Jokes on me. I thought when it said Obama “sent Putin a message on gay issues”, it meant he had blown Putin a kiss.
Elvis Stojko, and that’s about it.
Rumor is Putin is dating an Olympic Rhythmic Gymnast..................................................................................... Oh sorry, my mind wandered for a minute.
Putin must be laughing his head off, seeing how America, his once-formidable Cold War adversary, has become such a farcical joke of a country.
America 1954: standing for freedom and democracy.
America 2014: standing for dope and anuses.
“You may feel relaxed and at ease..but please leave the children in peace.”-—V. Putin
Nobama pushing a homo agenda to Putin won’t go well.
Putin will find a way to pay us back. He is KGB.
Think of this.
An affirmative action Chicago street hustler going up against a major in the KGB. Who is the better chess player?
Our ‘president’ is about to get owned. Count on it.
obama is a passive-aggressive nancy boy with his “message.”
Putin is KGB. He kills people. He ain’t impressed by obama in any way.
How in the hell does an amateur figure skater make a living? Boitano seems to be loaded. He’s a hell of a decorator, too.
Every time Obama opens his mouth to these people he drops down a couple more levels in their estimation. He’s probably somewhere below sea-lice and whale sh** at this point.
And now the official yogurt sponsor of the US Olympic team cannot ship over its yogurt to Russia. Sen. Chuck Schrumer is at loss with himself (his state makes the yogurt).
I don’t EVEN want to know what tweaky-boy said to Mr. Putin.
ROTFLMAO
Ya, these get ups are pretty gay!
Yeah, he's so much cooler than Obama. So what? He's still a tyrant. I don't get why some Freepers try to turn him to some kind of a hero.
