House Republican pushing mileage tax to bolster Transportation funds (RINO Alert)
Hot Air ^ | February 6, 2014 | Ed Morrissey

Over the last few years, we’ve seen Democrats raise the idea of adding a new revenue source to supplement the gas tax, as revenues have declined from this stream due to increased fuel efficiency thanks to mandates to that effect imposed by Congress. One bad idea that never seems to die is a mileage tax, which would force Americans to track their travel — or have government do it for them. That idea got shelved along with the Democratic House majority in 2011, but now it’s crept across the aisle (via Instapundit):

The problem isn't blowing cash on bike paths or public transportation necessarily. The problem is government cant accomplish ANYTHING without a massive, wasteful bureaucracy in place.

With a bike path, at least some of us subjects get Something for our hard earned taxes even if its a pittance in comparison to what the leviathan takes in.

But i know what you mean.

As I understand it some 30% is skimmed right off the top before they even get around to wasting money on things that are only marginally related to transportation.

A few years back Carl Levin was seeking some $2 million in highway funds to save what was left of the partially demolished Tiger Stadium in Detroit. His justification for seeking transportation funding was that a bus stop would be included.

maybe you should look into how much a 18 wheeler pays in road tax, before you shoot off your mouth.it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

False Assumption Number One: “Even though the Federal Government goes broke EVERY year, there still really are Federal Trust Funds, such as the Highway and Transportation Trust Fund, the Social Security Trust Fund, etc.”

Or we could stop blowing money on bike paths and public transportation.

Here's a dandy.

Ohiopyle Falls is the site of a new visitors center. The center will be used for recreational commercial white water rafting companies to coordinate their activities with the state park.

The center will be largely funded through a $4 million grant awarded by the Federal Highway Administration for Pennsylvania byway projects in April.

The river is navigable only by raft, kayak or canoe.

It’s a tax on the big, wide-open, red states.

Precisely.

“I’m starting to heavily question why I’m a registered Republican.”

So that you can FIRE THE BASTARDS before they do more damage, and because YOU don’t want to contribute to the expedited destruction that is certain to occur when the Libs prevail.

America does NOT have the time to “teach the GOP a lesson” and hoping for change.

Get off of your butt and support Constitutional Conservatives!

When you figure in the sales tax we pay on gas, Michigan may be even higher than NY!

We don’t need this kind of crap. They start with a small percentage, “you’ll hardly notice this tax” then raise as much and as often as they can get away with.

Nuts to this rino.

That’s why getting Fred Upton canned from that committee would have been SUCH a sweet victory. A shot across the bow of all the other control freak RINOs.

Thanks for posting that. Some folks don’t know where their “stuff” comes from. They think truckers are out there clogging up the roads just for fun.

Meanwhile Canada is waiting to build a second bridge over the Detroit river that they’re paying for but Obama now refuses to release the $250 million needed to prepare our side of the river (Demolition of existing structures, construction of highway ramps and lanes, and customs plaza. Instead Obama is giving money to other cities for “Promise zones”.

While people like to beat up on Detroit one fact would not change whether Detroit was there or not. Its still the second busiest freight crossing on the continent and its bottle necked across the democrat owned Ambassador bridge.

Where i live in central Florida there is a massive effort to “beautify” the roadways. Lavish landscaping in the middle of nowhere, light poles on both sides of the four lanes going one way AND the other way...every 75 feet, 12 foot high sound barriers for subdivisions that were built AFTER the toll roads and million dollar signage so drivers can be aware that its going to be a 12 minute drive to the next exit.

In one spot in the orlando area I pulled onto the 408 toll road on ramp and in the middle of nowhere I counted 32 road signs that were in my view. Even the smallest of government entities are wasting tax dollars by the truckload

if they can force a purchase of insurance...

this is all about control.

They administrators see mass transit dying with self driving cars so the mass transit unionistas will become interstate highway sensor grid workers. (and campaign donors)

Shuster sees this as his own personal power grab.

I support a higher gas tax

Really? You think it's proper the Government makes more money from a gallon of gas than the people making and selling it, and in fact should make even more?

I put your words up in nice bold type in case anybody missed it.

As vehicles get more and more fuel efficient, the revenue is getting less and less. Hybrids pay far less in road taxes, despite weighing just as much. Electric cars pay no road taxes, despite weighing just as much.

The green weenies are afraid of a mileage tax on their electric cars and their plug-in and regular hybrids.

The Chevy Volt comes to mind right away as a vehicle that pays far less in road taxes than it should.

A miolage tax falls heavily on folks out west. If I go to town (shopping center) larger than my county seat (pop. 1400), it is a 120 mile round trip. The county seat is fourty miles there and back. What kind of deal would that be?

LOL there was a big pile up on I-94 just north of me yesterday and it brought the usual screeches about getting those damn trucks off the road.

In my opinion the first people who should get off the highway in whiteout conditions are us roller skate drivers. I know I would have avoided that stretch of highway like the plague yesterday morning. Truck drivers will run more or less the same speed without too much dodging in and out of lanes.
