Well, no, Viet Cong, but Kerry had little to worry about, since even at point blank range and under intense fire (per Kerry's formal report), Kerry's Swift Boat suffered not one bullet hole or other damage. (Official US Navy records.) This was all hashed out by Kerry supporters and detractors on the Swift Vets' site back in 2004. (For the unfamiliar, keep in mind that a Swift Boat is about the size of a semi.) About the only thing I can figure out (barring TOTAL fabrication by Kerry) is that the VC were shooting at birds for dinner, or Kerry actually heard some firecrackers going off, onshore.
(Again for the unfamiliar) the “bullets” incident that I refer to was a different episode than the rice-in-the-behind escapade.

The rice in the butt story is in our book “Unfit for Command”, as is the frag hit from his own grenade launcher, and the non-existent enemy-caused injuries on the Bay Hap River where he deserted a stricken Swift Boat and crew, and lost a Special Forces soldier from his own (he was rescued when Kerry came back from “5,000 meters of small and heavy enemy arms fire” to cut off the other Swifty boats going to his rescue.
A follow up book, “To Set the Record Straight”, by Scott Swett and Tim Ziegler, provides more information about Kerry’s actions and fake injuries.
Took us two years to find more documents about the Bay Hap River incident, but they proved that Kerry was a liar. Well worth the research.

He served in Vietnam for all of three months. I heard more real bullets in Brooklyn than he ever has.
I see Kerry made sure the camera got is his best side on a sunny day.
