What they did do was keep her name active in the database for 36 years.
This wasn't a waste of resources, probably more a case of technology finally catching up with her.
She admitted she did the crime.
She should do the time.
I agree with you, but I think after 36 years “attempted shoplifting” should probably have been minor enough to get her off a database. I guess government really throws nothing but liberty away.

As an above poster noted, incarceration is intended to rehabilitate the convicted and since she has never had a problem with the law again, I would say it worked.........at no cost to me!
If you want her thrown in jail, New Jersey's got plenty of bucks so you take her...........
