Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Tuesday that he does not see any way the Democratic-controlled Senate and GOP-led House will agree on immigration reform legislation this year.
ADVERTISEMENT McConnells comments, which came after he met with the Senate GOP conference over lunch, poured cold water over the growing buzz there could be an immigration deal this year.
McConnell said a deals unlikely given what he called the irresolvable differences between the Senate and House.
I think we have sort of an irresolvable conflict here, he told reporters. The Senate insists on comprehensive [legislation]. The House says it wont go to conference with the Senate on comprehensive and wants to look at [it] step by step.
I dont see how you get to an outcome this year with the two bodies in such a different place, he said.
Senate Democrats say immigration legislation must include all the major components of reform, tying a path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants with border security and worker visa provisions.
House GOP leaders released a set of immigration reform principles last week during a three-day retreat on Marylands Eastern Shore. The principles largely reflect the Senate-passed bill but does not include a direct path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants.
McConnell, however, said Tuesday he thinks the bigger obstacle is that Senate Democrats want to overhaul the nations immigration laws in one large package while House Republicans want piecemeal reform.
Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas) said a comprehensive package is unpalatable to many Republicans.

Translation:
The Scumbag is worried about re-election. He’ll postpone collaboration until AFTER the fools renominate him.
Oh, yes, let’s cook up a scheme where the REPe want amnesty, but perhaps really don’t...then allow other REPe to come through and “stop it” to help their re-election...and once re-elected, then pass amnesty and cheer 0bummer.
Mitch has seen his latest poll numbers and Bevin’s latest poll numbers. Time to bail.
McC may be lying on this. He’s trying to woo over Bevin backers for the fall.
As bad as McC is, people in KY think he’s peaches and cream. They must be truly uninformed.
Ryan must be begging Schumer to let him switch parties, but Charlie says, “No, Paul, you’re much more helpful in the ‘opposition’.”
“Devious”: it’s a word that confuses the American people.
Who taught Ryan how to betray: Kemp, Boehner, or Romney?
SO MANY Americans are so far gone, so asleep....somehow we just have to wake them up. I know we are tired of talking to their cold, dead eyes, but we have to because we are sprinting toward the finish line and we are losing.
Mitch is feeling the heat from his base back home isn’t he?
McConnell should have kicked the GOP Gang members off committees. Flake, Hatch, Cornyn and Graham should not be on the Judiciary.
his comment is a lol..fear can bring a politican around, at least for a while..election=fear. Hope he doesn’t get another 6 years...
Bwahahaha!
I had the same thought — a disinformation ploy.
Not pathetic — it worked well for super-RINO John McCain.
He should call out Ayotte, Pryor and Hagan and make it a political issue for them.
Well, speaking as someone “next door” (we see a lot of the KY political ads on TV, and spend a lot of time in and have many friends in KY), I’d have to say that McConnell’s main appeal is bringing home the pork. In fact, that seems to be pretty much the entire focus of his current ads. “He cares”, you know. And, it is true that he’s more conservative on most issues than whoever runs against him in the fall. But, and I’ll grant you this is not a scientific poll by any means, I don’t think a lot of Kentuckians are particularly happy with Mitch at this point.
