The English,Germans,French,and Italians are geographically close.

We are a large country with one language. Big difference.

I wasn't being serious. Notice that I did not include Spanish.

Sometimes I wonder what European tourists arriving in America think--that Americans think that there are only two languages in the world, English and Spanish?

In Europe, Spanish is useful in parts of Spain (from what I have heard, in the Catalan-speaking areas they would rather you spoke to them in English rather than in "Spanish," that is Castilian), and in Galicia you are probably better off if you can speak Portuguese since Portuguese and Galician are very similar. Outside Spain, I don't think you will find much use for Spanish.
