Last year, the district’s boundaries were changed so that it now pretty much encompasses the district represented by conservative firebrand “B-1 Bob” Dornan from 1977-1983. So maybe a GOP candidate has a chance.
Yup. New CA-33 looks like a swing Republican district in a non-Presidential year. The redistricting took swapped out ultra-reliable black and Latino neighborhoods in favor of wealthy white and Asian neighborhoods in the west Valley and in Palos Verdes.
However, my guess is that this is an easy (and permanent) hold for the Democrats with Ted Lieu. Being Asian and from the beach cities enables him easily to outpace four or more Jewish Democrats from the westside and also to keep any Repulican from building up a base in the beaches and Asian voters himself.
