It was Mount Tambora in Indonesia as well. It must have been something to see if you survived. It’s hard to comprehend an event larger than Krakatoa or St. Helens.

And the Toba supervolcano eruption about 60000 years ago nearly caused the extinction of the human race...

I’m envious but I did get a helicopter ride down inside the crown of the most active vulcanoe on the big island -— the day the tsunami hit. Once in a lifetime!

Sinabung’s been erupting for a while now. Where has the BBC been? Evacuation of the vulnerable areas should have been done a long time ago.

This is an interesting scale of the magnitude of various historic eruptions.

Whenever I see a story about an Indonesian volcano I think of the story of the British Airways 747 that flew through the ash cloud of just such a volcano and the ash caused all four engines to shut down.IIRC the engines were out for quite a while and the story went that some passengers were on their knees praying in the aisles.
Yikes!

Here's the MODIS Terra image of the Sinabung eruption ( brownish blob ) ... right next to Lake Toba, which of course is the caldera of the Toba eruption.

And as the icing on the cake, the ash scoured the windscreens in the cockpit essentially blinding the pilots...

According to Wikipedia a member of the cockpit crew made this general announcement to passengers during the crisis:
"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress."
Distress? Hell,I would have filled my underwear within seconds of realizing that all four engines were out.

OR.... you can just press the CTRL and + key to ‘enlarge’ the page.
CTRL and - shrink the page.
CTRL and 0 reset it to normal size.
In FIREFOX, just use the VIEW / TOOLBARS / CUSTOMIZE and there are two ICONS you can add to the TOOLBAR LINE that perform the same thing as the CTRL + and CTRL - combo.
