You do realize, do you not, that the ante-bellum South and the Confederacy were pro-free trade and that the Federalist/Whig North was protectionist? One of the reasons the South seceded was their objection to a protectionist tariff.

After the Civil War, the Democrats were free traders and the ee-vil Republicans were protectionists--just as the Whigs, the Federalists, and George Washington were before them.
