Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican Party in the U.S. Senate, has low ratings among voters in his native Kentucky, according to a survey released Wednesday by Public Policy Polling.
According to PPP, 37 percent approve of McConnell's performance as a senator, and 51 disapprove.
He has a one point lead, 45-44, over possible Democratic contender Alison Lundergan Grimes.
Since the estimated margin of error for the survey is plus or minus about four percentage points, the senate race is essentially even.
There has been a "run of PPP surveys showing the two
candidates within a few points of each other going all the way back to last May," the pollster reported.
Proposals to raise the federal minimum wage may be a key issue in Kentucky, PPP reported, with 57 percent supporting it in Kentucky, 34 percent opposing and 17 percent saying the issue is important enough to them they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who opposes increasing the minimum wage.
McConnell is leader of an increasingly divided Senate Republican Caucus, which has split on a number of issues along conservative vs. moderate lines.
Grimes, 35, could prove to be a formidable opponent as the election draws closer. She was elected Kentucky's Secretary of State in 2011 with 61 percent of the vote against the GOP's Bill Johnson.

Buh-bye Mitch.
Though I hope Bevins should win, I'm down with Mitch losing in the General.
So, since the GOPe and TEA Party are in favor of Mitch going down, maybe he will....
Good post. Right on the mark.
Next in line for dismissal.... CORNYN
From your keyboard to God's ears!
Praying that Matt Bevin kicks Midge’s sorry butt out of the race. Just like Ted Cruz did to the RINO Dewhurst, in TX.
It wold be a prayer answered. he has been nothing but a phony from day one. He stands for nothing but himself. You couldn’t get a yes or no straight answer out of this charlatan if you stood him up against the wall in front of a firing squad.
I heard one of his lying commercials today. I about threw up in my mouth. Sure didn’t sound like the same CREEPY BASTARD CORNYN that didn’t back his fellow TEXAN AND OUR YOUNG HERO SENATOR TOM CRUZ on the senate floor during his filibuster.
Instead the CREEP cornyn manipulates the senate campaign fund like a lord.
While I question any PPP poll, McConnell is in real trouble. Even if his approval/disapproval rating were 44% instead of a 37%, he’d be in trouble. In a year where the electorate is increasingly anti-incumbent, a party leader tied at 45-44 is unlikely to succeed. The best chance for the GOP to regain the Senate is with Matt Bevin who is not tainted by DC corruption.
Meanwhile, the race in Georgia is too close for comfort.

You got that right.
Mitch stabled us in the back too many times, hes now a liability greater than the democrats.
I assume that all of you were among the 4 million Republicans who sat out the 2008 race because the (admittedly flawed) candidate was not perfect. Looking for a RePeat or ThreePete, are you?
Same with me and Cornball
If McConnell loses the primary he will run as an independent so as to help the democrat.
I have never sat out an election in 42 years. And I have never voted Rat.
Romney’s BS nomination and the cheating and dirty tricks the GOPe used to hurt conservative candidates was the last straw. These bastards have declared outright war on conservatives - McConnell has been very in your face about it.
I’m not taking any more sh1t from some traitorous scum like McConnell who has SOLD US OUT time and again. And will do so again as soon as he gets reelected.
The fact is, we will NOT be better off keeping McConnell over a Democrat. It is a sickening fact to admit, but it is so.
Whenever it’s a close race, and there’s a recount, the Democrat ALWAYS wins.
Trust me I live in Minnesota.

Kentucky is not Minnesota. Thank God there is only ONE Minnesota. If we had 50 Minnesotas, we would have been the United Socialist States of America long ago. There are many States that have recounts and the Democrats do not “ALWAYS” win. Why do you stay in that Godless state? I left Michigan and moved to Texas in ‘87 so my kids would not grow up in a Liberal bastion.
Mitch has two candidates attacking him before all of Kentucky; the Dem witch and the GOP Primary Candidate, Matt Bevins. Let the Dem help weaken McConnell in the eyes of the folks of the Blue Grass State. That will help Matt Bevins in the GOP Primary. Then he can win the General Election. Am I right or wrong in my assessment here? Anybody?
Rand Paul and his naturally curley hair should run for Libertarian of the Year. I’m sure he’d win!
The fact is, we will NOT be better off keeping McConnell over a Democrat. It is a sickening fact to admit, but it is so.
Conservatives are in a truly awful dilemma right now. We have a rampaging marxist in the WH and an “opposition” party totally disinterested in engaging him no matter the usurpation. Obamacare, amnesty/immigration, IRS, Benghazi, F&F, etc., etc. It’s been surrender monkey politics by the GOP across the board.
I have come to the conclusion that if the GOP won’t defend my constitutional rights I simply can’t support them. We have had YEARS of assaults upon us by the kenyan yet the GOP can’t be bothered to engage him directly and defend us. Well GOP, bye then!
