President Barack Obama will announce on Tuesday he is issuing an executive order to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour for federal contract workers with new contracts, the White House said.
In his State of the Union address, Obama will also call on Congress to pass a bill that would increase the federal minimum wage for all workers to $10.10 an hour from $7.25 and index that to inflation going forward.
The executive order for new contracts or existing contracts in which terms are being changed would take effect at the beginning of next year. Issuing the order allows Obama to bypass Congress in a limited way, with Republicans opposed to a broad increase in the minimum wage.

I made more than $10 per hour spraying grass seed on a federal project some 20 years ago.
This is how the unions will get increased revenue from membership dues. They need that money to wage the upcoming battles for the Senate and later, the Presidency. Without union money, the Democrats can’t manipulate the zero infobots into thinking they can better help the needy.
Aren’t there some union employees whose pay is a miptiple of some base wage? Might this be used as a tool to increase other wages?
Im bad. I thought ALL spending had to be approved by congress.
How little did i know that i lived in a third world banana republic my whole life
Raise minimum wage then fewer people will receive subsidies’ for Obamacare. That will reduce losses on Obamacare and push more of the cost to the on to the individual. So the individual will be no better off from the higher wage but Obamacare will look better.
The purpose of this action is to created huge discontent among all beginning employees who will want to know why the starting wage in the private sector is not $10 per hour. These are the first steps to creating a massive wave of discontent among the ignorant young, making them useful idiots in the upcoming revolution. None of this is not without a lot of thought. This nation is in very real danger.
I don’t agree with Obama at all. But...he said this would occur on NEW contracts.
It’s still a stupid idea.
Isn’t their a thing called Prevailing Wage for federal contractors. What a jerk
I would imagine some of the low level jobs in cafeterias pay that little.
Indexed to inflation. Yeah..that will come in handy in the coming year.
What new federal contract would pay anyone less than $10 an hour?
This is another truth people who should know better do not realize. Barack Obama is NOT the problem. The extremely wealthy people behind the scenes going for totalitarian control ARE the problem and no one is pointing those people out.
Further proof (as if we need any more!) that Obama absolutely DOES NOT want to solve the economic woes he created ever since taking office.
Real pathetic that Plouffe still blame it on Bush this weekend.
This mouthpiece report defines $12 an hour as too low and seems to indicate that few would be making less than $10 an hour.

Yes, those working at minimum wage want a better deal.
Can’t blame them!
Problem is, if their wages go up, the price of EVERYTHING they purchase goes up, wiping out the wage increase.
Further, their snap cards do not “buy” as much stuff as before.
The low wage folks lose big, and they do not see the big picture
Why should the minimum be the same in San Francisco and Tuscaloosa?
Depends. Its purpose is to make Republicans look bad. We'll see if it works.
