Back during Vietnam, we had an influx of draft dodging Americans into our community, they lived subsistence up and down along the river; they were called the river hippies and there were quite alot of them actually. Reason why they came was it was easy enough to disappear in Alaska as a hunted draft dodger and yet be 4 miles from Canada. They could always jump in a boat and run upriver into Canada as a sanctuary if the law ever hunted them down. Most moved on after the war, but a few stayed on and they are now the old left wingers & potheads in their 60's & 70's. Some are wanna be artists, some into the greenie movement and wanna kiss the wolves. Everybody else laughs about how they got here and why.
I suppose we will have another influx if there were to be economic upheaval, but they wouldn't survive as easy as they did back in late 60s. Everything is so much more expensive, less salmon & moose to eat, and it's getting tougher with each year.
Locals jokily talk about burning one lane wooden bridges on the road to our community to keep the hordes out. I have to laugh, most wouldn't survive the locals.
Could be right, but this Miami girl would have a hard time living in Canada.
