It sounds to me as if the stolen lap tops contained sensitive HR and payroll information.

It’s crazy that this information wasn’t encrypted or that the laptops themselves didn’t require a strong password in order just to start.

I’m in HR/payroll and sometimes take my work laptop home with me to work over the weekend or on bad weather days or days I need to work from home. But I have to authenticate myself at boot up and then log into the secure encrypted VPN network with a separate password, then I have a separate password to get into ADP. No sensitive data is ever stored on the computer’s local hard drive, none, nada, never. In fact I don’t think I even can save any data to the C drive, IT has it locked down. Any and all data files are on the network on secure drives that only certain people have access to (hopefully).
