I did 3 days on bread and water while in the Navy, for firing off bottle rockets on a foreign navy base. I was lucky I wasn’t shot by the locals. 3 days wasn’t horrible but I had a feeling that any longer and it would have been a LOT worse. The last meal the last day was just...bad.

Ah the funner moments of Liberty Call LOL. My last cruise in 79 we pulled into Venice. IIRC a significant number of Engineering Dept wrecked some local bars. Admiral was not pleased to say the least and the entire ship about lost Liberty the duration of the deployment. From then on we had Liberty Passes. I wasn't involved in that one I was on Boat Crew duty that night best I recall.

Boat Crew got to deal with the drunks. The worse was the Squadron Officers. One night in Genoa a Squadron insisted his bride was coming back to the ship with him. His bride? A Pig they had found or bought LOL.

I saw the brig on the ship several times. Fortunately it was from the outside of the cells when the Marines turned the heat on in the summer. I went down there on trouble calls or fire department walk through.

IIRC if the Old Man gave you Bread and Water that was the only punishment he could award. IOW no reduction in rank or forfieture of pay or restriction etc to follow.

Yeah, my 3 days was the extent of my punishment. I was famous for a while after, because the ships paper always posted a few details of infractions. Mine amused the crew.

The worst part of the brig was that it was right above the engine rooms, so it was hot. They had one little fan that rotated, to circulate the air. It just made me SO sleepy, but of course, sleep wasn’t allowed during the day. lol
