Raiderette sues team, saying Raiders didn’t pay cheerleaders minimum wage

If you were looking for a good punch line for the Oakland Raiders, a woman named Lacy T. provided enough for an entire offseason.

The Raiders, who lost their final six games of the season and haven't been in the playoffs since the 2002 season, don't even pay their cheerleaders minimum wage. That's what Lacy T. said in a lawsuit against the team, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Chronicle reported that the suit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, is a proposed class action lawsuit on behalf of 40 current Raiderettes and other former team cheerleaders from the past four years. Lacy T. (who isn't identified by her last name for security reasons, which is in line with a team policy) wants other NFL cheerleaders to join the suit too.

"I love being a Raiderette, but someone has to stand up for all of the women of the NFL who work so hard for the fans and the teams," Lacy T. said in a statement released by her lawyer, according to the Chronicle. "I hope cheerleaders across the NFL will step forward to join me in demanding respect and fair compensation."

The Raiderettes make $125 per home game, not enough to cover the games, charity appearances, practice and the team's swimsuit calendar photo shoot. Lacy T. claims that's less than $5 an hour, and on top of that the team makes them pay for travel and hits them with fines. They also have to pay for accessories like fake eyelashes, the Chronicle story said, and a team-selected hairstylists. The fines seem fairly ridiculous. Here's what the Chronicle wrote about them:

Give me a break. They joined up for the extracurricular benefits. Like meeting Mi$ter Right. Although Richie Rich will do in a pinch.

How long is the line at tryouts? Hmmm?

A contract is a contract, they knew what they were signing and wanted the
exposure and got it. They wanted the lime light, and got it. They wanted
side deals that paid more, and got it. They wanted that contract, and got it.

Read the contract.

I was always under the impression that this was one of those jobs that salary didn’t matter, it was the perks....

Way back when, while stationed in DC I was an usher at the Senators ball games...
Plush job....get to see free ball games, reduced (if not free) stuff from the concession stands, and to REALLY sweeten the pot, got about 4 a game. That was in 61-62.
Sure beat the ‘P’ out of the 6 bucks a night I made setting pins as a 14 yo in a bowling alley, working double alley, double shift 5 nights a week....However in 53-54 30 bucks a week (plus weekends/tips) was some pretty decent money for a teenager.....

Next thing you know ‘they’ will be saying there isn’t enough money in cleaning the ‘viewing booths at adult theaters’ (Well, I will concede that there isn’t enough money for that - then again, guess I haven’t been needy enough to get in that trade) IMNSHO, even that beats welfare/unemployment.

And absolutely nowhere near what they are worth. I only wish I could comfort each one of them individually for how they are exploited because I am a guy who cares.
