My brother in law got a Wndows 8 laptop. He likes it because he never previously used any other versions of Windows. He spend a lot of time going through the manual and online tutorials and it seems OK for the very limited use he makes of his laptop... Primarily email and a limitled web surfing. However as an experienced Windows XP and Windows 7 user I about went nuts just trying to remove the bloat ware and install Avast anti virus on his Windows 8 laptop.

I am very happy with Windows 7 that I installed when I rebuilt my desktop. Just be sure to load up on RAM..I'm running 6GB. I also really improved the performance of my Windows 7 machine when I updated all the component drivers to the very latest versions

Well he’s fortunate to be using it in such a limited capacity. If your brother-in-law should ever try to use another OS, I’m sure he’d be surprised (and liberated) to discover how much more intuitive a superior OS can be.
