Windows 8 may be nice with a hand held touch screen but it sucks for a laptop or desktop OS. Unless you put in a small amount of work to use the Windows 8 desktop by default, then it's a better version of Windows 7.

Right. I loathe the default start screen and it's idiot apps. So I uninstalled them. Now only my desktop applications show up on my start screen. Whenever I want to use one, I hit the windows key which toggles between desktop and start screen. Now I can easily find the application, push the icon button, and W8 switches back to the desktop and starts the chosen application. Easier than hunting through a list of applications in the old start menu/
Also, from the desktop alt-f4 brings up the shutdown option screen.
