Planned Parenthood Laying off in Iowa, Closing Clinics in Secret

Quietly abandons surgical abortions in Bettendorf and Sioux City

DES MOINES--January 22, 2014--Iowa Right to Life has discovered that Planned Parenthood of the Heartland has quietly laid off all but one employee (a center manager) at their Creston and Red Oak, Iowa locations. In addition, Iowa's largest abortion provider has halted surgical abortions at its Bettendorf and Sioux City abortion centers.

This is not the first time PPH has tried to keep closings and layoffs quiet.

Last November, IRTL alerted the media that PPH was closing centers in Ankeny, Fort Dodge, Mount Pleasant and Washington, after hearing of massive layoffs at those locations on Veteran's Day (11/11/13), as well as cuts in key staff at PPH's headquarters in Des Moines. IRTL also forced PPH to come clean in December, when it discovered the hours at the Creston and Red Oak centers were reduced to zero.

Iowa Life to Right Executive Director, Jenifer Bowen, says PPH's covert changes and layoffs should surprise no one. "Planned Parenthood does not want the public to know they are closing clinics," said Bowen, "so they can continue to collect millions from donors and Iowa taxpayers, while providing zero services."

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's most recent Annual Report for Fiscal year ending in June 2013 shows the organization made a profit of $740,241 last year, before their Veterans Day layoffs. In addition:

* PPH's Taxpayer-funded Grants were up to $3,303,171 in 2013 from $2,673,281 in 2012.

* PPH's Investments Income jumped to $969,721 in 2013 from $264,068 in 2012.

* PPH's Patient Services Revenue leaped to $17,219,377 in 2013 from $13,890,520 in 2012 (PPH talks about serving the poor, while collecting millions from patients.)

* PPH's Public Donations jumped to $10,784,476 in 2013 from $6,974,442 in 2012.

* PPH also received $214,427 from the Department of Health and Human Services in August 2013 to hire and train Navigators to sign people up for Obamacare.

PPH sent out an email soliciting donations on 1/8/14 with no mention of the layoffs in Creston and Red Oak or that they were abandoning surgical abortions in Bettendorf and Sioux City. Both Bettendorf and Sioux City still perform the more dangerous medication abortions, which are...

The people at the top of Planned Parenthood are getting rich, while fleecing the poor. They should not have any taxpayer funded grant money.

The audience applauded and she shut up

One of their closed clinics is on the road to where my mother lives. In their heyday, they attracted more protesters than customers.

They are tax sucking lowlifes in the progressive mold, trafficking and profiting on the misery of others.

A couple of years ago GOP Governors stepped up their efforts to close down PP by denying them funds.

Shortly after that Obama started the "War on Women". No coincidence.

I think alot of Republican politicians have abandoned that goal. They don’t realize how much Planned Parenthood money to defeat them.

Yes, all good news. I buried a miraculous medal in the snow before the Bettendorf Clinic was built. I think I had it blessed. That was a lot of years ago now.

If there is any credit due, it is to God, Our Lady, of course, and the hundreds of people who stood in all weather praying outside, usually the rosary. I wasn't one of those.

There was a pro family clinic built across the street. They did a lot of reaching out to people seeking to end their pregnancies by abortion. We had two terminations of pregnancies in December, healthy baby boys ;-) My great grandchildren.

Yes, but sentiment at the state level is changing. Thus, the closings. And, thus, Sebellius and Obama's desperation in efforts like the "War on Women" and the abortion mandate.

If they can’t find a doctor willing to do the abortions, they have to close.
Doctors used to justify abortions by saying they were providing a service to women, much like plantation owners were providing a service to their slaves. But when the lights came on, they had to see what they were really doing. They were making money by killing kids.
I also understand that it is harder to find nurses. Even pro-choice nurses don’t like to work there because they have to see what is happening.

There’s a story in the Iowa Right to Life News January edition that showed how pro-life clinics are making a big difference in Iowa. There are actual numbers to show how abortions have gone down after certain clinics opened. Here is an excerpt:

Informed Choices in Iowa City opened April 2009. Before
2009, annual abortion totals in the ITOP Region (ITOP = Iowa Termination of Pregnancy Report) that included Iowa City, never fell below 500. After Informed
Choices opened, the 2009 total was 409. In 2010, it
dropped to 376 and in 2011, the number fell to 354.

Mary’s Choice opened in Sioux City in early 2011. In the
three years prior to the pregnancy center opening, 2008,
2009 and 2010, the abortion numbers were 200, 176 and
167. In 2011, with Mary’s Choice in the market, abortions
were down to 129.

Planned Parenthood in Iowa is set up to distribute medication abortion pills by webcam in most of their clinics. The woman is never examined by the doctor in person. They talk to the doctor by webcam. So they only need one doctor to cover the state.

Thank you for that. That is substantial progress. Kudos to those groups. It takes special kinds of people to put their thoughts, words and prayers into [legal] action.

Obama's statement on the Roe anniversary today: Women need abortion to "fulfill their dreams."

Today, as we reflect on the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, we recommit ourselves to the decision’s guiding principle: that every woman should be able to make her own choices about her body and her health. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to protecting a woman’s access to safe, affordable health care and her constitutional right to privacy, including the right to reproductive freedom. And we resolve to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, and continue to build safe and healthy communities for all our children. Because this is a country where everyone deserves the same freedom and opportunities to fulfill their dreams.
