Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, might not want her Democratic colleague, Mark Begich, to win re-election in 2014, but her habit of breaking with the GOP on several key votes could give him some political cover ahead of 2014.
As an Alaska delegation, weve got to be working on those issues that are important to our constituents, Murkowski told the Anchorage Daily News this week. Sen. Begich has been keying in on the issues that I think Alaskans are worried about and doing what he was tasked to do.
Im going to be working to get Republicans elected, she later added.
Murkowskis more moderate voting record could help Begich, given how much the two Alaskans overlap on some issues. Begich faces a tough re-election fight this year in a state that has traditionally elected Republicans to Congress. Theres a competitive GOP primary in August to determine his opponent.
Murkowski, once a member of the Senate GOP leadership team, has broken ranks several times since her 2010 re-election victory as a write-in candidate. Murkowski votes with her party only 61 percent of the time, according to data compiled by the Washington Posts Congress Votes Database.
For Begich, that means any Republican candidate who criticizes his stance might also be disparaging Murkowski.
Murkowski was one of six Republicans to support opening debate on the extension of long-term unemployment benefits, and she told CQ Roll Call that GOP leadership didnt try to pressure her otherwise.
Before Democrats changed the Senates procedural rules, Murkowski was one of two Republicans to consistently vote with Democrats to open debate on nominees, even as her other GOP colleagues filibustered them. She was the third Senate Republican to back gay marriage.

Murky is always “workin’ hard” for the peeps of Alaska.
Wishful thinking by the heads of production at Roll Call??
I worked hard as I could to get Lisa outta D.C. and I will nx time too; she’s no good. I don’t think you even have to worry about Begich getting re-elected. He has a long liberal record that he can’t hide, especially Obama Care. I haven’t heard one Alaskan say anything good about Mark; not a chance for the boy that’s viewed as a real dummy up here.

How in the hell did he get elected back in 08 if no one likes him?
Apparently they liked him better than Stevens.

I hope you’re right. Who do you like for the republicans? I haven’t read too much about the race but I know there’s Treadwell and two guys with the same name.
Speaking as an Alaskan.... Begich and Murkowski are perfect examples of why the 17th Amendment needs to be repealed or modified back to its original form. Neither represent the people of Alaska in any meaningful way. (Although anyone who witnessed Murkowski’s successful write-in campaign has to be impressed by her political savvy.)
I wouldn’t surprised by anything she does to screw up conservatives up here.
“Although anyone who witnessed Murkowskis successful write-in campaign has to be impressed by her political savvy.”
Or her vindictive zeal to keep a conservative from getting elected to the senate!
>>>Or her vindictive zeal to keep a conservative from getting elected to the senate!<<<
Don’t mean to imply that I like her politics... but her strategy is something we can learn from. The election was Joe Miller’s to lose, and he lost it on his own. A cautionary tale to everyone, really.
I'm going to have to drag out my old Miller sign I guess. Whoever wins the Repub primary will get my vote. I get the local Indians to fill out their absentee ballots and I send them in, we do have a few Indian REpubs here, vets.
Ya know, here in Eagle, we still have State Rights & Wally HIckel election signs hanging outside on garage walls, a good thing you know; people shouldn't forget. Joe Vogler's old claim isn't that far downriver either.
Murkowski lost the primary to tea party Miller, did a write in campaign come fall. Had good ole boy REpubs and her dad and judges backing her. Murkowski went to AFN (Indian) yearly fall conference (all the Indians show up) and promised the dem Indians all the gold they could eat, if they voted for her. Entire villages filled out ballots for every voter in one man’s handwriting, for Lisa Murkowski. She won by 10k votes, there’s 90K Indians in Alaska. Not a judge in ALaska would call her on all the corruption and she won. Now that’s the truth. I actually heard about her secret plot before the AFN conference, didn’t actually believe it myself, but it sure worked, ya she’s a slick RINO.
Thanks for your response. My question was regarding Begich’s election
which I’m assuming you are say he won the same as Murkowski.
I know, you’ll laugh even harder when the Dems keep the Senate. You all have much more to worry about in the lower 48 than any Alaskan has to.
TurdKowski won because of spineless RINO’s and democrats who voted for her over their guy because they knew their guy didn’t have a chance. She will do it again, and the idjits will vote for her again.
I have a slim bit of hope that Begich can be defeated. Man I hope so.
“TurdKowski won because of spineless RINOs and democrats who voted for her over their guy because they knew their guy didnt have a chance.”
Yup! She wanted to prevent a conservative from getting elected, and the democrats knew she was basically a democrat so they gave her behind the scenes and behind the curtain in the voting booth support.
Moderate republicans and democrats are allied against conservatives.
Murkowski won the senate race for one reason and one reason only. The Alaska Republican party crapped all over the republican candidate. I have no reason to believe they will not do so again. I dropped my registration as a republican as a result and have never regretted my decision.
