“To me, thats damn cool. “
—
It IS cool, and the astonishing thing about it is that so many people take these things for granted now, including me.
I still remember where I was and what I was doing when John Glenn was first orbiting the earth.I was transfixed with the wonder of it all. I need that enthusiasm back.
Thanks for sharing this.
.
Thank you. I have never heard of it. But it sounds like the author might have reconciled faith and religion regarding the Story of Creation in the same way I have.
You may be correct, in which case the tail would always point away from the sun regardless of the comet’s direction of travel.
It’s been awhile since I studied comets, thank you for correcting me.
Keep an eye out, I’d much rather post science stuff than politics any day.
I was to young to remember John Glenn, but I do remember apollo 1 burning up and of course the moon landing.
Yes, i want something to be excited about again. Love the mars landers, Cassini and New Horizons flyby of Pluto in 2015.
It’s a shame what Obama has done to NASA.
I looked it up just to make sure I was correct. No harm, no foul.
To be honest, I don’t know very much about the subject.
However, I did find this...
Jan. 7, 2011 In a groundbreaking achievement that could help scientists “build” new biological systems, Princeton University scientists have constructed for the first time artificial proteins that enable the growth of living cells. ...”

We’ve also got Juno headed for Jupiter and Dawn is heading for Ceres.
forgot about those, thanks.

Study icy gonads? That’s an outrage! What is NASA, an Eskimo hooker? I think they should use the NASA budget for space exploration. In fact..
What..icy nomads?
Never mind.

LOL.....back in the day when SNL was funny
That's the problem with Genesis. It's way short on details.
Even though some try to use it as one, the story in Genesis was never meant to be a scientific treatise.
I'll bet God used icy comets and other debris to fill the oceans.
One wonders how much water that would require. Here's a picture.
Same with light. Genesis should have been more specific about using a nuclear reaction to get the sun going to light the earth.
Then again, the audience that Genesis was written for were not nuclear physicists.
And the whole 7 days thing? How long is one of God's days? I mean, for our God who has been, is and always will be in eternity, does he/she really keep a calendar based on how often our tiny world spins on its axis? You think he celebrates his own birth day?
"Jews wrote the old testament, and if there's one thing that Jews are good at, it's bullshit."
TOO Johnny Appleseed for me to accept.
First, comets are not the only thing that seeds Earth with water and other ingredients. The Earth is constantly bombarded with water and minute particles.
If comets helped seed Earth, then they seed other planets as well. Johnny is a very busy boy.
I was going to be clever and post a YT of Gene Autry singing “Rosetta”, but couldn’t turn it up, AT ALL. Bupkis. Found out that Ray Charles had recorded it, that was it. Not even a wackopedia page. Anyway, thanks ct! Extra to APoD.
Obviously I was being a bit facetious regarding Genesis. I am happy to debate folks on the symbolic nature of Genesis (specifically regarding creation) considering the audience God had and the primitive nature God’s people at the time.
I have come to the understanding, with regards to Genesis, that while the words are those of God, they were first explained as they were understood for the audience of a race of people starting 10K to 15K years ago. This was likely before Hebrew people (if they were so labeled at the time) had any written history. God’s simple, and symbolic, explanation to humans about how we got here had to be something they would understand (without an understanding of God’s laws of Physics for his universe). God’s word was passed down generation to generation for thousands of years by story before somebody wrote it down. Who knows how many languages it was translated to and from.
I do believe the essence of creation is captured in Genesis, even if the version printed in the bible is out of sequence or details have been lost. Oddly, as the lineage/ancestry of people evolves in Genesis, things tend to get more specific. But it is important to note, Genesis spans a history of thousands of years (best we can tell). The stories following “The Great Flood” seem to get more specific of details. Before “The Great Flood” humans lived to be several hundred years old, Abraham, Noah, etc. After the great flood, life expectancy seemed to go down. Moses supposedly only lived to be 119 (I think). That said, how were ages measured back then? I have wondered if, through translation, a measure of how many generations a person survived might have been the standard measure of age until a certain point. Moses seems to have lived to see several generations of Hebrews live, grow old (whatever old was back then), reproduce and pass. Abraham supposedly lived to 175 (I think) and was still producing offspring late in those years. Symbolic or lost in translation? Hard to say.
Still, the entire Bible is relevant and does paint a picture of an evolution of God’s relationship with his people all the way to the present. I do believe the Bible is the written Word of God. But I am aware that it was written by man, as intended divinely, to remain relevant for eternity. The proof is what I tend to find in the same words when re-read at different points in life. Taken in part or as a whole, it lays the foundation of how to continually build a relationship with God in hopeful expectation of joining him in heaven when this short existence as man comes to an end for each of us.
Obviously I was being a bit facetious regarding Genesis.
Understood. Sometimes one must to get a point across.
I am happy to debate folks on the symbolic nature of Genesis
I bet you like sticking your fingers in a running fan too.
: )
How else can you be sure what directing the blades are spinning? Duh?!
Well, you can use your tongue, like I do.
