Nearly half of black men and 40 percent of white men are arrested at least once on non-traffic-related crimes by the time they turn 23. That's according to a new study.
The estimates published this month by criminologists at the University of South Carolina and the University at Albany didn't rely on arrest records but on an annual federal survey of 7,000 young people who answered questions from 1997 to 2008.
The authors found that by age 18, 30 percent of black men, 26 percent of Hispanic men and 22 percent of white men have been arrested.
By 23, those numbers climb to 49 percent for black men, 44 percent for Hispanic men and 38 percent for white men.

Does that count?
I believe they calculate non blacks as anyone else. Everyone else in the US are whites except the bothers.
Oops bothers = brothers
None of the young men I know have ever been arrested. Can’t think of one. I’ll have to look at the study, stats have to be off.
Wow. That is a scary statistic.
I can’t imagine being arrested. I think I would crumble and die on the spot.
Tell any male under the age of 21 who is arrested for a non-violent crime that all charges will be dropped if he has a vasectomy.
never arrested, never done anything to warrant arrest.
Sounds like “kids will be kids” to me. Lots of young people first learn respect for others until the cell doors clang.
behind them.
Also a society that won’t let young people afford a family is a society that will make those young people criminals.
they pass so many laws to use the law as a weapon against people who are not by definition, lawbreaking criminals. the lawful can’t be arrested because they don’t break laws. so those that want to target the law-abiding pass laws that turn the law-abiding into criminals.
I feel I’ve missed out.
In my 40’s and never arrested.
Now I’ve got the money to get out of most anything, but when I was a young man...?
i agree. white guys aren’t breaking the law at that high of a rate. probably multiple arrests of the same people.
Thank you for pointing that out.
It’s always about money.
DUI probably accounts for a good many.
What matters is TYPE of crime.
Violent? Non-violent? Writing a bad check or beating up and old person?
Yeah, it matters...
the article says “non-traffic-related crimes “
I’ve been arrested twice. Never been cuffed though.
I was arrested before the age of 23, was also married, a father, served 2 years in the Army, and held a technical job too before age 23.
This is not an article with actual statistics. It is based on estimates, and makes no comparisons to other years, other times.
So all in all, rushing to make a big deal out of this, is not persuasive.
Plus given all we see of the police these days, I’m inclined to believe they arrest MORE now, and warn LESS.
Agree. I was just going to post one of my “I call Bull....” posts on this thread. Not even that high.
Why would criminologists conduct a study when the FBI collects and publishes comprehensive hard statistics on crime? Too much work crunching all the numbers?
