Everyone was saying that we would have to agree to keep East Germany out of NATO, and give Russia special rights in Eastern Europe.
The wall fell under GHWB and he not only insisted on all of Germany in NATO against all prevailing “wisdom” he then supported Yeltsin against the attempted Russian Communist military coup.
I don’t know what you heard him mumble, but he brilliantly and peacefully maneuvered a Russian withdrawal from all Eastern Europe.
But hey you heard him mumble, I guess you would have preferred Russian armies in East Germany right now or maybe a nuclear war as the USSR deteriorated?
