It is being dubbed the “gentle succession” – as the Queen gradually begins to relinquish some of her traditional duties as monarch.
As she approaches her 88th birthday in April after almost 62 years on the throne, she has agreed to hand over part of her workload in a historic “job-share” arrangement with Prince Charles.
In a royal first, he will be taking on more head of state-style responsibilities as the Palace starts to make tentative plans for his eventual succession.
Courtiers yesterday described the softly-softly move as “wise” – and “just plain common sense”.
The first sign of the partial power transfer will be the merging this week of the Queen and Charles’s press offices.
In future any announcements concerning the monarch and her 65-year-old eldest son will now come from the same source. Palace sources insist the switch will be entirely seamless.
Princes William and Harry will also play their part in the new set-up, with both assuming far more responsibility since they relinquished their military roles.

I have appreciated reading, somewhat belatedly, your insights about Prince Charles, and I very much hope they are accurate, and not mere projections or hero worship. I was appalled by his and Camilla’s too-frequent costuming in Islamic garb for visits to those communities. It gives the strong impression of succumbing to them and their theological tyrannies rather than welcoming them to Western, Christian values of freedom and peaceful coexistence.
As the proxy for the head of state, the UK heir apparent should no more bow to their dress code than he would to that of any other nation. He should have worn a suit and homburg or bowler. Camilla should have worn a below-knee dress, grayish stockings, long sleeves and a conservative hat.
Because of your posts, however, I will try to keep an open mind, since the office of sovereign of the UK is one of the most pivotal points of influence, if not naked power, in the tattered remnant of the Christiological West.

The issue received wide coverage as lately as 2008, not 20 years ago. It is a perfectly terrible idea; the fact that he is shifting over to the Republican idea floated in the American Revolution is a critically important distinction, and one which is constitutional in UK as well. He desires to back away from defending his own nation's more than 1000-year history of a bulwark not only of Christian belief, but of resistance to islamic insurgency.
Unlike the Telegraph's attempt to downplay the importance of this shift by calling it "subtle" in the article below, it is a very serious matter and one he should most definitely reconsider, since Islam demands two obligations that are entirely in opposition to Christianity and peaceful coexistence with Christians: first, the obligation to usurp or destroy any other law but shari'a, and second, the obligation to lie to the infidel.
It would signal his ultimate surrender to dhimmitude and the end, not the beginning, of his reign.

Interesting article. I’m amazed at how the Queen still uses snobby social customs left over from the Edwardian era. No Brown in Town and the old, but favorite snobbism: no made-up ties! I haven’t seen a clipped-on tie since 5th grade Catholic School but those Brits have eagle eyes!

Although I have never met the Prince, my friend worked for The Prince's Trust and was very impressed with both Charles and Camilla.
They are both gracious and very knowledgeable.
I have no doubt that, when his turn comes, Charles will be a good king.
Having said that.....Long Live The Queen!
This 'old saying', as you call it, has been attributed to Eleanore Roosevelt, although I recall it being attributed to someone else (Oscar Wilde?) Be that as it may, the last time I quoted it here, together with the customary attribution, the response, which only proved the point, was that Roosevelt was a Communist!

Yeah, well...that’s justified, IMO. In this house we don’t have the coffee made until 5:45, so bleary looks and uncommunicative grunts carry the hour.
Tut, tut: rahther uncharitable, my dear! One of the very, very best things about English tradition is the extremely fine workmanship in tailoring and haberdashery. The court is a place of respect. You wouldn't want to see jeans and tube tops at the Lincoln Center or the Met for an opera performance; likewise I think QE2 has the right to careful dressing in her court. After all, she could be milking it with fabulous gowns and furs all the time, but has adopted a businesslike but distinctively stylish contemporary look for an aged woman. Commoners can harmonize with her style in their clothing without breaking the bank.
Without a little bit of decorum, her court might end up like what we have here: the first lady of state flashing her armpits, bra straps, nasty bermuda shorts, wide stance, loud colors, wacky fashions, naked legs and thighs "up to there" at officials and public events.
