What the hell is wrong with cops nowadays? Nothing.
They are doing exactly what their master want them to.
We even have cheerleaders (with knee-pads) right here on FR...

What the hell is wrong with cops nowadays? The same thing that's wrong with Congressmen, executive-branch bureacrats, school teachers, corporate CEOs and CFOs, university presidents and provosts, and pretty much any one else whose job description involves power or money held in trust or managed on behalf of others: they all think their position exists for their benefit, not those whom they are in theory being paid to serve (or in the case of police serve and protect, and the nearly universal police department motto puts it). We live in the Era of Bad Stewards. Virtually everyone in a position of trust is corrupt, if not outright, and directly (whether on the take or contriving to get pay packages with no relation to performance), then by virtue of wanting to expand the reach, power and influence of their offices beyond what the good they theoretically serve would warrant.
In cops it comes out a little differently, as violence, either as in this case violence perpetrated against innocents on some pretext or intimidation of people who want to fix their unsustainable pension fund, swagger, and violation of constitutional right (they in theory are supposed to defend). But it's the same mindset.

One part of the problem is that of lifelong civilians and rear echelon types being the majority in leadership positions, and they don't feel comfortable around prior soldiers and others who were in combat specialties. Policies favored such men in the past. In the boot camps for young men in trouble, for example, police with civilian or more civilian-like histories (as differentiated from men with prior, men-only combat specialities) tended to be more vindictive in rough situations. Some former nightclub bouncers and martial artists might also be better candidates for police work (if possessing exceptionally good temperament and morals).
The greater part of the problem is our general societal moral bankruptcy. Too many are apathetic, spoiled, selfish and lacking in common sense, although they have degrees.

What the hell is wrong with cops nowadays? I think the sea-change occurred with the unionization of police forces across the country. Cops no longer responsible to citizens; their allegiance is to the unions; and unions will defend a cops actions no matter how egregious.

Union protection for corrupt cops. They are powerful politically and I am surprised at the cooperation or brotherhood of corruption that has devolved in US policing. Some units are like gang thugs.
