Are you thinking about buying a new fuel efficient car but are wary of hybrid technology? Fear not! There are dozens of cars on the market today that deliver great fuel economy without resorting to heavy and expensive battery packs. While most of these vehicles are designed to run on petroleum products (either conventional gasoline or diesel fuel), the Ford Focus SFE is a FlexFuel vehicle that can run on 100% domestic E85 ethanol fuel as well as conventional unleaded gasoline.
2014 Ford Focus five-door E85 holds a significant price advantage over regular unleaded gas in some parts of the country. It comes as no surprise that the top of the list is dominated by Volkswagen TDI models, as clean diesels are renown for their excellent highway MPGs. While this list is primarily 2013 models, weve included the remarkable 2014 Chevy Cruze Diesel

I’ve got a couple vehicles that like premium, and the last I paid was under $3.25!
I am with you on that. A 1500 type truck with a 4/71 or 6/71 type engine, modernized of course would be pretty good for using the truck for a family sedan as I do with my 1500 king cab. I get 18 to 19 mpg with my variable displacement 5.3 LS. With the proper diesel and gearing I would expect to come close to doubling that. Not holding my breath.
Because the federal government measures fuel economy in MPG rather than BTU, it is basically encouraging consumers to buy diesel, even though it doesn't really save energy. The E85 fuel has less energy density than gasoline, so the fuel tanks have to be larger to get the same range as earlier gasoline vehicles. Back in the 70's when the CAFE standards were started, diesel powered cars were considerably dirtier than gasoline and didn't have to meet the same emission standards. I'm not sure if late model diesel powered cars today burning low sulfur diesel are as clean as modern computer controlled fuel injected gasoline engined cars.
The interesting part is that his office is maybe 3 miles from his home. The more interesting part is that he's always been a fan of muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s. If there was ever anyone for whom driving a classic gas guzzling performance car made sense, it's him.
Honda Civic owner since 1998. Current one is a 2012 which gets 39 mpg highway. No major mechanical problems on any of them. Have gotten over 200k on all them.
