A Rio Grande Valley Catholic deacon who is also a school principal was arrested after allegedly sexually abusing an altar boy, according to police.
Ronaldo Mitchell Chavez was arrested Friday by the Mission Police Department on a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.
The alleged sexual abuse of a child started when the boy was 15-years-old, police said.
The now 17-year-old first spoke to an investigator in December where he allegedly provided a statement about the sexual abuse, according to the Mission Police Department.
Police told Action 4 News the deacon would drop the other children off at their home, but take the then 15-year-old boy to his house where the alleged sexual encounter occurred.
Police said the altar boy's mother said he suffered mental problems and was admitted to a healthcare facility to be examined.
Chavez is behind bars at the Hidalgo County Jail on the felony charge, and his bond is set $10,000.
The Mission Police Department had been investigating Chavez for about a month before they had enough information to arrest him.
According to the Texas penal code, continuous sexual abuse is when a person commits two or more acts of sexual abuse during a time span of at least 30 days.
According to the Juan Diego Academy Catholic Regional High School's website, Chavez has served at the Parish of San Cristobal Magallanes in Mission.
Details on where Chavez is currently working in the educational field were not immediately made available.
Action 4 News does not release the names of victims of sexual abuse.

Was he married? Deacons can be married, you know.
They never go after girls.
I have a friend whose wife is a boy scout volunteer and he told me they have a rule that no adult is aloud alone with one or more of the scouts. Adults must be in pairs.
Disgusting. If an adult tried that with me at age 15, I would have used his scrotum for field goal practice. Some kids are more easily manipulated, I suppose.
but had nothing to do with homosexuals.....
/s
To reiterate, most deacons are married men. This guy is a closeted gay.
A Catholic deacon is usually a married man.
That makes it OK??
How about the victim?
Girl took care of it Irish style. He's lucky there were no brickbats lying around.
Well, it pushes the celibacy thing aside. It is like a Protestant minister doing the same thing. It is homosexual behavior. It would also be wrong if the victim were a girl.
Unlike your first ping one that one has a point in it.
I actually know some Catholics here (women naturally) who are liberal, typical for Maryland, who told me that if we let priests get married to other men, these molestation cases wouldn't exist.
They claim this is all our fault for repressing them.
That sounds what you were getting at.
Don’t you think it is wrong when people try to say that it wouldn’t happen if priests were allowed to marry?
Couldn’t somebody turn around and say that it wouldn’t be a problem if we allowed sex with underage children?
It isn’t because they are Catholic priests, married or unmarried. It is the individual who is sick and a sorry human being.
Not to mention a queer child molester.
Indeed.
See #11
Ah. I didn’t see 11 before I posted. That’s it, isn’t it? All things must change to make the offender not responsible for his or her own actions.
I haven't seen any libs calling for giving man-on-boy predators a break legally.
But they love to promise us that going along with them will fix things they wont fix.
And once you give out those sodomy licenses its nearly impossible to take them back.
Agree.
Pure and simple. These criminal perverts are not Catholic. Their crimes offend the doctorine at every level, they are homosexuals that falsely became priests to access victims.
The "homosexual movement" has infiltrated all institutions of Western society, at least since the 1950s.
Government schools, government, academia, msm.
Anywhere they have access to children and can influence opinion.
I do not think it is wrong to debate the celibacy issue. My take is that the requirement for celibacy limits the type of man who wants to enter the priesthood. No red blooded normal man, a man’s man, would be attracted in any way to the priesthood, thus you are left with the damaged, the weirdos.
