GOP establishment panics over Christie’s troubles: “I think we need Mitt back”

ALLAHPUNDIT

Dude, it could happen. Three easy steps to Romney 3.0: He comes out strong for amnesty to mend fences with Latino voters; he finally decides to ix-nay the “makers and takers” etoric-rhay, and of course he chooses Mike Huckabee to be his VP. Can’t. Miss.

Seriously, though, this is just one Republican operative talking and he’s obviously joking. I think?

In interviews with more than a dozen party officials, fundraisers, and strategists in New York and Washington over the past 10 days, Republicans described a palpable sense of anxiety gripping the GOP establishment in the wake of Christie’s meltdown, and an emerging consensus that the once promising cast of candidates they were counting on to save the GOP from the Tea Party — and the nation from Hillary Clinton — is looking less formidable by the week…

“There are definitely people jumping ship,” the operative said, noting that confidence in Christie’s electability has dropped off sharply among the donors he’s heard from…

In fact, it’s gotten so bad, the operative said, that some donors have started looking back fondly on the good old days of 2012: “You know what a lot of them say to me? I think we need Mitt back.”

Not even the GOP establishment could be so badly out of tune with America that they’d consider bringing back Romneymania — I think. But the larger point, that Christie’s souring image and the fact that his lingering mutual contempt with conservatives makes him a tougher sell than thought, is apt to make country-clubbers look around for centrist alternatives now. Don’t underestimate either the lingering grudges held by prominent Romney fans towards Christie for his betrayal in 2012...

Harold Stassen, who was elected governor of Minnesota at age 30, is no longer with us. He would have been a far better candidate than Romney or McCain.

Too bad he’s dead, we could really use him this time around! ;-)

.....

Harold Stassen is best known for being a perennial candidate for the Republican Party nomination for President of the United States, seeking it 13 times between 1940 and 2000 (1940, 1944, 1948, 1952, 1964, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992.

Stassen also ran for:[citation needed]
Dakota County District Attorney (he won in 1930 and 1934);
Governor of Minnesota on four occasions (he won on his first three attempts in 1938, 1940, and 1942, but was unsuccessful in 1982);
Governor of Pennsylvania twice (1958 & 1966);
United States Senate twice (1978 & 1994 in Minnesota);
Mayor of Philadelphia once (1959);
U.S. Representative (he was the Republican nominee against Bruce Vento of Minnesota in 1986).

Stassen’s strongest bid for the Republican presidential nomination was in 1948, when he won a series of upset victories in early primaries. His challenge to the front runner, New York Governor and 1944 G.O.P. presidential nominee Thomas E. Dewey, was serious enough that Dewey challenged Stassen to a debate on the night before the Oregon Republican primary. The May 17 Dewey–Stassen debate was the first recorded modern debate between presidential candidates to take place in the United States. The debate, which concerned the criminalization of the Communist Party of the United States, was broadcast over the radio throughout the nation.

Mitt had to give his wife an ocean side mansion so she’d let him run last time. This time he’d have to give her a small South American country.

who do they think is gonna vote for Romney this time? / rhetorical

I believe strongly that the GOP wants the RATS to win.

None of this matters to me since I won’t be voting for anyone supported by the Uniparty.

Next vote I cast will be for a good solid patriotic Tea Party candidate.

/not interested in any suggestion that I must vote for a GOP RINO for whatever reason! I am not a RepubliCANT.

Neither of these Rovetards, mittens or fatso, should ever be allowed anywhere near a Republican primary ever - which means they will be pushed front and center (far left of center) by the GOPtards.

Thanks for your comment (post 58). I have been thinking of exactly that, and the Constitution Party is the one I would focus my attention on.

I know for a certainty that the Republican Party as currently constituted does not represent me in any fashion and I want nothing to do with it.

I’m talking about CRUZ, lest anyone thinks I’m referring to Mitt. Still, is there any question that Mitt would have been far better than Obama? Day one, Obamacare would have been dead in the water.

Obamacare would have been dead in the water.

I doubt it.
