There’s an old expression that comes to mind: “The [stolen] hat burns on the head of the thief.”

I want to amend the meaning of the old saying I just posted and have looked up.

“The hat burns on the head of the thief” does not means that the thief necessarily had stolen the hat, but that he/she, with the knowledge of his/her misdeed ever present, starts to behave involuntarily in such a way that the thief’s having committed a particular misdeed becomes apparent and revealed.
