President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday no athlete would face discrimination at next month's Winter Olympics, hoping to ease international concern over a Russian law banning gay "propaganda".
Aware that the success or failure of the Sochi Games will help shape his legacy, Putin has closely identified himself with the $50-billion event which opens on February 7.
Putin outraged many in the West last year by signing a law banning the spread of homosexual "propaganda" among minors. Critics say the law is discriminatory and aimed at stifling dissent but calls for a boycott of the Games have failed.

The liberal definition of "discrimination" does not fit reality.
Imagine that, Putin outraged a number of perverted degenerates by announcing that Russian children will not be available for the same-sex perverts to molest. Gee, what an outrage.
Too bad.
it also means no special treatment.
iow no “special rights”
Exactly. Basically, Putin is anti-pedophilia. However, with the way our world’s culture is degenerating, that will be probably be the next “sexual rights” movement the Left will endorse.
Too bad, indeed.
While these gay athletes may be exempt from these Russian Pro Family laws, they will not be exempt from the Boos of the crowd and an American public who will not hope they win their Olympic competitions.
Africa and Russia are exhibiting a sexual ethic more in line with the Judeo-Christian world view than the United States.
Wonder if Putin’s harshest critics on here (many who support the Communist Chinese)...are really upset that he is not shtupping down to da they?
Putin deserves respect for the truly unusual characteristic of leading a “reality based” government. This means several things:
1) Russia first. Putin is a loyal, nationalist Russian, *not* a multi-nationalist or an internationalist. Which is very irritating to internationalists and socialists.
2) The Russian Orthodox church is the closest thing to a state religion, and he likes and respects that. For a very long time, Russians have wanted Moscow to be the “third capital” of Christendom, after Rome and Constantinople. So instead of a secular leader, he also wears the hat of a Christian leader. Which is very irritating to internationalists and socialists.
3) Morality is beneficial for society. This means heterosexual marriage, parents raising their children to be moral, patriotic, and healthy, as well as keeping the lid on perversion, bad behavior, and crime. Which is *also* very irritating to internationalists and socialists.
Precisely. I wonder how many Freepers are old enough to remember when the gay lobby said “just leave us alone and let us do our thing in private.” Hint: It wasn’t that long ago.
I’ll believe it when the have the ‘Pussy Riot’ Russian rock band as a opening act.
This will be the first all gay all the time olympics. I will not be watching a single minute.
It was certainly in the lifetime of those old enough to vote today.
Of course to the fags, that's not enough.....They want to be celebrated.
‘1) Russia first. Putin is a loyal, nationalist Russian, *not* a multi-nationalist or an internationalist. Which is very irritating to internationalists and socialists.’
Whatever else one can say(good, bad or indifferent) about Putin, I think he truly does love his nation. Can we say the same thing about our president?
‘2) The Russian Orthodox church is the closest thing to a state religion, and he likes and respects that. Anything that irritates the internationalists and socialists has got to have some good in it.
‘3) Morality is beneficial for society. This means heterosexual marriage, parents raising their children to be moral, patriotic, and healthy, as well as keeping the lid on perversion, bad behavior, and crime. Which is *also* very irritating to internationalists and socialists.’
Very good.
Wish I could send this post to everyone who’s written about the poor queers in Russia.
Spit on them :p
