Federal Standards for Identity require that the limit on true US Boubon not exceed 80 Proof.
Wild Turkey is a good bourbon. The proliferation of new brands and special editions though now offers numerous choices that are often superior to their main label counterparts and to long-established brands.
I thought that was Jack Daniels.
Yup, that’s a thoroughbred. My last girlfriend was an ass.
The following definition comes straight from those standards:
(1)(i) Bourbon whisky, rye whisky, wheat whisky, malt whisky, or rye malt whisky is whisky produced at not exceeding 160° proof from a fermented mash of not less than 51 percent corn, rye, wheat, malted barley, or malted rye grain, respectively, and stored at not more than 125° proof in charred new oak containers; and also includes mixtures of such whiskies of the same type.
I guess I should add that, yes, yes, I know Jack is “Tennessee Whiskey” and not technically a Kentucky “Bourbon” but there are lots of states where Bourbon is made and Tenn Whiskey is only made in Tennessee -— I know you guys in those two states are very sensitive about all these distictions.
Wayne, I think it is limited to 80% (160 proof)so I guess I don’t know why Jack is only 80 proof.
Again, form the Federal Standards:
(b) Class 2; whisky. Whisky is an alcoholic distillate from a fermented mash of grain produced at less than 190° proof in such manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to whisky, stored in oak containers (except that corn whisky need not be so stored), and bottled at not less than 80° proof, and also includes mixtures of such distillates for which no specific standards of identity are prescribed. (emphasis mine)
Many thanks...I commend you for the in-depth research..
You’re welcome. It’s a sacrifice I am happy to make for my fellow man!
;-)
This is both good and bad, meaning it works out for the beam distillery and their employees in the short term, but will eventually mean that jim beam will be relocated to china in the future. Even the Japanese know how to outsource and exploit a brand name for profit. You could bottle varnish and slap a jim beam label on it, and people would buy it solely for the label.
LOL
This is one of those occasions where you should speak for yourself, versus a couple hundred million consumers.
My Dad is kinda a Scotch connoisseur. He and I have been drinking a glass pretty much every evening before dinner for the last 7 years or so. Go through about a fifth a week. Tried ever type and brand available here (Alabama) as well as many that aren't available here(Bama’s got some stupid ABC laws).
Couple of weeks ago came home to find that the bottle was empty!(Oh NOOOO!!). Had a bottle of George Dickel available so poured him a glass of that. And he's been drinking that for the past two weeks. On the rocks. Bought a 2nd bottle. Dickel “classic recipe”. He likes that even better. Gonna try the 12y.o. next.
I prefer Tennessee whiskey over bourbon but I flat out hate Jack Daniel.
Nope. It was Makers Mark. The tour guide and I were joking about it when I was bringing some out of state friends through.
Wow! I didn’t know there was that much money in liquor.
I think Diageo’s market cap is somewhere close to $100 billion.
Modern Drunkard is a hoot, but it doesn’t update its website very often.
