(Newser) Bacon lovers, be warned. A fast-spreading pig virus could send pork prices to record highs in the US, reports the Wall Street Journal. The PED virus, short for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, has hit farms in 22 states so far. It's lethal only to young pigs, not humans, but the Journal says the number of pigs being lost per week is likely to push pork prices beyond the record of $3.81 a pound. A post at Agri-Pulse predicts that the worst spikes will come in the summer.

Will it also affect the feral hog population?
Gwaltney bacon at Sams was 9 dollars a 3 pound pack here in Va. Another reason to leave California!
Three or four years ago there was a bad peanut harvest. The following year peanut butter doubled in price... and it’s never gone down. The ratchet and pawl of incremental inflation.
Turkey bacon ain’t bad.
Shoot, bacon prices have already shot up and now I only buy it occasionally. If the price goes up more, I will just look at the bacon with fond memories when I shop.
Likely to push it higher? Higher than what? It was $7.99 a pound at our store last week.
Glad I home-cured and smoked 12 pounds of pork belly recently. I have more bacon than I can eat in a year :)
PETA is dancing in the streets.
I buy one lb. of bacon a month. I pay $5.99 a pound for it but it reminds me of the bacon I had when young. Thick. The local meat market sells it and I just can’t help myself and buy a lb. every month when I go to pick up my months meat order.
I like the thick bacon, too. I’ve been buying Wright bacon as it has a good flavor and the price is decent, it actually dropped in price from what it was running last spring—18.99 for 2.5 lbs.
I bought some right before Christmas and I know it was cheaper but I don’t recall the exact price (we were going to have bacon over the holidays!) hahaha! I *think* it was 16- ish, though it was on special.
I thought about trying a meat market but shortly after we moved here I read a news story about the one nearest us having some issues and when I further researched it on the net, it didn’t have any good reviews.
I think I need to look into this again— there’s bound to be a good one around here. When we were stationed in NC there was a fantastic meat market. It would also be nice to find good soup bones, it’s a real chore to find them at the grocery store.
Meat is getting too expensive and now China is getting into the mix—ugh.
“Turkey bacon aint bad.”
It ain’t good either. I don’t know how we’ll cook without bacon and bacon grease.
We have a very tiny market not far from us that survives on their old fashioned meat counter. They have ‘packs’ of meat that you can buy. We buy one a month and it lasts us all month. Cheaper than if I bought meat at a regular grocery store and you just can’t beat their meat.
