Whatever this president's "national purpose" might be, you can count on its formlessness. The "purpose" will really be all about the ceaseless hustling needed to keep "the masses" off balance and on the march, even if they are moving in all directions.

This is ever the worn tactic of tyrants, and the prudent resists even debating about it, because even engaging even in this argument serves the purpose of the ceaseless hustle.

Eric Hoffer, long ago, compared a society's most vulnerable to being swept up in mass movements to men on the very precipice who are caught off balance, frantically flailing their arms to regain a center of gravity.

This tactic is serves to undermine self-confidence, sanity, and, secondarily, but no less important, to distract.

Unfortunately, excepting for the devil, the best counter to mass movements are other mass movements, and Republicans don't possess the depth to play this audacious game.
