The moment one creates contiguous countries based upon ethnicity, instead of an array of civil wars you'll have wars between nations. That's an improvement, right?Has the artificial construct of borders imposed on the locals in the Middle East and Africa worked out well? I don't have the answers.

The respect in which they've done the most damage has been with regard to hunter-gatherer and pastoral nomads. A substantial degree of the desertification of the Sahel has been due to forced sedentism of nomadic tribes.
