The MXT135 Counter Defilade Target Engagement System has a range of roughly 7,800 feet - and is to be deployed in Afghanistan soon. I would call it the "Equalizer." Some call it the "Punisher".

All weapons development should halt for the sake of the possibility of their use against us? Good idea.

Do you have any idea what the implications are for our infantry forces? This thing would’ve been a Godsend in Iraq.

You're putting words into my mouth to construct a straw-man. Not a good idea. I'm simply pointing out that there is reason not to be "stoked." Between drones, government control of communications, and weapons like these, the idea that the people can take on the tyrants is under stress. That means we must compensate. To fail to point that out is stupid. To criticize it is worse.

Are you stupid? Or worse?

All I see is a fancy grenade launcher. Is this thing a rifle as well, as with previous test versions of this concept?

Wiki says:
-
The XM25 Counter Defilade Target Engagement (CDTE) System,
also known as the Punisher and Individual Semiautomatic Air Burst System
is an air burst grenade launcher derived from the XM29 OICW.
It was fielded to soldiers serving in the War in Afghanistan
and was projected to enter full-rate procurement in 2013.
However, the Senate Armed Services Committee eliminated all funding
for the XM25 in its revision of the Pentagon’s budget in June 2013.

Probably be tested by the IRS before they give them to the military.

Every time I see a new advance weapon system I am the opposite of stoked. My fears of a government takeover lingers in the background (I just have an uneasy feeling and fear another power hungry monster like Obama) and taints the achievement. I imagine how powerful this weapon systems would be if used against it own populace.

But overall pretty cool weapon system and happy for our soldiers, except for the tone down bullets for stunning. We do after-all want to catch and release our enemies.

I’m not constructing a straw-anything, just carrying your own comments out to their logical conclusion. Surely your comment didn’t reach the inanity of “well, it’s OK to make it, but nobody should get excited about it,” right? Because that would be worse than stupid.

I completely agree.

America does in fact need to pay attention to our government, but it beats the heck out of all of its competitors everywhere in the world.

Even as currently, occupied by Obama.

Technology always advances. Either it advances by us driving the advance.

Or it advances by our opponents driving the advance.

Always.

That said, bring back American jobs.

Lazar gives away position for drawing counter-fire from similar weapons, mortars, rockets, RPGs, Artty and air. Plus I’ll bet that at the very least the ChiComs already have all the blueprints, research data and prototypes.

No, they're not logical. The weapon is already here. That's why it's a straw man.

Surely your comment didn’t reach the inanity of “well, it’s OK to make it, but nobody should get excited about it,” right?

No, it went straight to the crux, which is that we face a tyrannical police state armed with these weapons and MUST devise strategy to be able to deter it or lose our freedom for ourselves and our children or die in futility fighting it. I don't find either prospect attractive. It is entirely logical, nor am I the only FReeper who saw that on this thread. Apparently it eluded you, which is illogical given the reality of those in power.

That such would not occur to you is indication of an obsession with an enemy that has blinded you to an even greater hazard. I'd say you took the bait.

Only America would spend and waste that much money.

As opposed to the cost of an air strike?

They just can’t simply call it a rifle, can they?

Thinking of a fancy acronym gives the staff pogues and chairborne commandos an opportunity to feel important. If their acronym is widely accepted, they even get medals.

The XM-25 had ammunition problems and it was withdrawn from combat service just as it was scheduled to go into production. I suspect that the ammunition problems were significant. This new model is a 35mm system, vice 25mm. It sounds to be like they completely redesigned the round and designed a manufacturing system to support it. The 25mm ammunition was practically all hand made and likely could not be reliably mass produced.

More a sophisticated mini-rpg than a rifle.
