So if you change from Republican to Independent you lose your right to vote in Primary right?

Here in Caliphornia we have open primaries. Anybody can vote for any candidate regardless of party affiliation.

So it's conceivable you can have two DemocRATS running against each other.

The parties allocate themselves money based on the number of registered voters, though.
