It’s either him holding the camera on the extension while it’s pointed at himself, or he’s handed it to another person, either way makes no difference. The location they are in is difficult to judge, you will always see some evidence of the shore when the camera is pointed in that direction, they weren’t that far from the breakers. An overhead shot from any one of the aircraft might have helped, but they are all too distant to see anything more than little dots here and here, which suggests that by the time the rescuers arrived, the passengers had drifted well apart.
