All I noticed is how quickly the family leeches came out of the woodwork to be there for him as soon as they heard he won the cash...
I had a friend who’s mom won one of the first BIG Texas Lottery jackpots...At the time he and I were in the reserves together, and he had his one ChemLawn franchises and that was his source of income...
When I heard his mom won, we both went over there and told her to get out of town...Lay low, and get a lawyer...Disconnect your phone as well...Have all communications done through the lawyer...
Well, she literally went out of town, and later we heard she flat went halfway around the world after securing the payout after we all got back from Austin...
She went to stay at the Hilton in the Maldive islands...hehehe, tough duty, but I think she could afford it...
When all was said and done, and the usual family, both immediate and distant, leeches came out to her place to find her...She had already given the house to my friend, and he still for at least two more years did his ChemLawn thing, not ever asking or expecting anything from his mom...
It just goes to show that virtue, even when it comes to family successes and failures is vacant these days...And my frind still lives in that house his mom used to live in...He learned how to be humble and appreciative of her success...And I believe it will pay off later on down the road...And even then he feels he doesn’t deserve anything but his mom’s love and attention to this day...
It’s disgusting how families act like this; treating the ‘failures’ like pariahs and the ‘successes’ like celebrities. Just a bunch of freeloaders looking for an easy ride.
Good story.
I know a person whose net is probably at least $20-30 million. His kids are completely rude to him and his wife, their step mother. He told me earlier this week that he’s changing his will/trusts situation next week, and each of his 2 children will get $2, the rest will go to a charitable foundation. He said he’s just sick and tired of the kids treating him like they do. I think they are going to be very surprised when he passes on.
I love my family, and don't think of them as leeches. However, should Mrs. henkster and I ever win the lottery, we have already agreed on one thing. With the exception of the accountant and tax lawyer, NOBODY KNOWS. Not even the kids. The lawyer goes on TV to do the press release. We keep working our jobs (for a while, anyway) and lie low. Charitable contributions will be done through an anonymous third party trust we set up.
Winning a lottery just puts a target on your back. But I'm not worried about this ever happening; I hear you have to buy tickets to win.
I do well enough that I could get my family some pretty substantial amounts without creating too much suspicion. I would probably give almost all the money away, anonymously, to worthy causes. However, if my secret ever leaked out, anyone who asked for money would be denied.
