He only lost a couple of seats and still held a substantial majority in the new Congress, and it was Gingrich himself who was properly credited for being the architect of that majority, starting with the Contract with America election in '94.
It was a revolt within the GOP House caucus against Gingrich that caused him to resign, but losing the few seats he did was a convenient cover. Truth is, he had nothing to be embarrassed about concerning his success at the polls as the most prominent Republican in Washington at the time.
Cover shmover, more like the last straw. If we had gained 10 seats instead of losing 5 Gingrich would not have resigned and would have remained Speaker.
