Hard to do. Half the garlic in Gilroy (The Garlic Capitol of the World) is from China.

Are you saying that if you buy california garlic, that it still might have origins in china?? This I have never seen. I need your source. We carefully buy organic California garlic and someone should be shot if this is really Chinese.

How is it possible to ship food from China cheaper than having it produced in the U.S. or Canada?

Farm Subsidies and a host of downright dumb OSHA, Dept of Ag, Dept of Labor regulations, minimum wage and a host of other policies that have killed American independence in the food supply.

Thanks for the info. I must admit I've been having a bit of a wake up call considering what you find when you begin researching the issue. For those that know my posting history, I'm realizing free-trade with communists is probably a really bad idea.

My dad gets honey from the guy who keeps 2 or 3 hives on his property. It’s a fair trade. In my dad’s favor we think. Dad gets all his fruit/veg pollinated and gets 2 or 3 quart jars of honey each year. If you have someplace that could support a hive and stuff that flowers it’s something to think about. Just need to find a reliable beekeeper and make the offer of extra space for them.

Agreed, as the ultimate customer we should get the standards we demand.

Just that one has to be careful. Just because it's packed in Gilroy doesn't mean it's California garlic. The Chinese garlic is labeled "product of China" or "grown in China" in very small letters.

Thank God the law requires that we have COOL (Country Of Origin Labels) on food stuffs.

oh wait...

Thanks for posting this.

I have been looking at the labels a lot more lately. Many packages just say “distributed by” with no origin. You have to call a companys headquarters to find out where things are coming from and even then they can’t necessarily tell you where all the ingredients are from. I would like to know where all the ingredients come from- not just where it is manufactured. (remember the flour in the cat and dog food coming from china- all poison)

Motts apple juice at Costco- it says “china” - stamped on the plastic bottle in very small letters- barely readable.

I don’t buy food products from China or Mexico.
It takes me longer to go through the supermarket, but I check the origin of the item diligently!

I have a list of foods that are made in the USA....and thats what I select from.

Drudge’s headline today is 75 Million Americans without jobs!!!!!!!!!!
Yet we outsource our jobs to foreign companies.

I am sick of it!

Agreed, as the ultimate customer we should get the standards we demand.

We have two corrupt governments that don't see it that way and don't want to.

The Chinese hold a lot of our debt; I'm sure they don't mind having some control of our food supply. It's a good bargaining tool. I suspect they are not as short sighted in their planning as America tends to be. On the other side of the coin, the federal government wants to make sure they can control the American people, holding the food supply hostage is a good way to do that.

We need to revive the concept of self sufficiency.

When I read that the FDA is negotiating with China I have to wonder what is to negotiate. How many people its acceptable to sicken or kill?

I can’t speak for every fish farm but I have a farm in the southern Philippines ,, we are rapidly converting to about an 80% fish farm/20% fruit tree mix as the government is fully supporting fish farming ,, we have two 1/4 hectare ponds right now with a mountain stream flowing through to provide a constant supply of clean water with pumps providing additional aeration, we will eventually have 6 hectares (13+ acres) of ponds ... the government provides fingerlings at no cost and we get most of our food from government rice mills (we get the husks) or fruit processors ,leftovers and trimmings from Del Monte’s Papaya , Mango and Pineapple canning operations ..

They’re sneaking in tainted chinese honey, too by bringing it in via another country to disguise its origin.

They learned that from US ,,, we’ve been trans-shipping lobster through Maine for many decades and mark the crates “Maine”.

In a Chinese restaurant only the help knows where the food comes from.

I know people who have eaten fish from the great lakes a couple times per week for decades with no ill effects for them, their offspring, or grandchildren.
************************
The PCB contamination some prior reply noted is a “red herring” ,, it’s heavy and settles deep into the muck ... it doesn’t stay suspended in the water ... the EPA is making GE “clean” up PCB’s in the Hudson ,, trouble is there was none in the water ,, they’re having to dredge muck to find it and it’s now getting back into the water that way ... sometimes it’s best to leave things alone.

The little lake where I live has mercury in the sediment but the wells around it test OK. There was a Ford plating plant that was upstream that closed in the 1930s.

The hydro-geological cycle here is primarily groundwater to lake so we don’t get the mercury in our wells.

It will be (and just in time) ,, it’s been a family farm barely breaking even for 40 years... our mango trees (about 2 hectares worth) are about to go into production... and we finally found someone who is serious about running the farm as a business...
