India ordered the United States on Friday to withdraw one of its diplomats from New Delhi, as the Indian consul at the center of the dispute between the two countries flew home after being indicted in New York for visa fraud.
Devyani Khobragade, 39, who was India's deputy consul-general in New York, was arrested on December 12 and indicted on Thursday before being effectively expelled from the country. Her arrest set off a furor in India amid disclosures that she was handcuffed and strip-searched.
She was flying to India on Friday and expected to arrive later in the evening.
The month-long row has soured the broader U.S.-India bilateral relationship, leading to reprisals against American diplomats in New Delhi and the postponement of visits to India by senior U.S. officials and another by a U.S. business delegation.
The deal bringing Khobragade home to India had been expected to help mend the rift, but there was no sign, in the short term at least, that India was ready to forgive and forget.

In New York, a federal grand jury indicted Khobragade for visa fraud and lying about how much she paid her housekeeper, but she was allowed to leave after she was transferred to India's U.N. mission and granted a higher level of diplomatic immunity.

The article gives a good synopsis of the entire affair.
Diplomatic immunity is sacrosanct, and a basic standard of civilised conduct in world diplomacy. The US under Obama is turning into a banana republic.
Not sure what the true story is, but the maid definitely has ulterior motives (to stay in the US) and I think the US Attorney, who is from India, also has an agenda.
I don’t see the US doing much of anythng to make this right. India is not some banana republic. They are one of our close allies. This clap trap over how much she pays her housekeeper is really small ball.
We have to mollify India, otherwise we would not get any tech support for healthcare.gov.
She already had diplomatic immunity, which is sacrosanct within the Law of Nations. In the old days, the Mongols sacked Baghdad and executed its emir by rolling him up in a carpet and trampling him to death with their horse after he killed one of their diplomats. Similarly, the Mongols also chased another potentate over a thousand miles before capturing and killing him by pouring molten silver down his throat for killing another one.
Messing with diplomats is not something you just want to do.
Not true. India is a world power and manufacturing giant. They are also our ally in a dangerous part of the world.
She worked at the consular and had no recognized immunity from the State Department.
Ally? Series? You bestow ally too easily.
When did you get interested in world affairs? Yesterday?
I think india is smelling the gay pedophile State Department mafya commissars. Sending these spies of the UN packing is a good move. They should do so with others too.
India has already its own problems with its poors getting pimped for inadequacy.
They do not want another US feminist homosexual tyrant bum to add to the force of the indigents.
They know who Obama is. As the movie by their compadre d’Souza explains well: 2016: obama America
India might be banana, but it does not want to stay banana.
Just another person commits fraud in the US and leaves.
” India is not some banana republic. “ - Yes, India IS A BANANA Republic.
India is a Socialist , heavily corrupt, racist country. They still have the UNTOUCHABLES.
Do not be fooled by their elections. Communist countries have elections, see Venezuela
Still they take on the so called superpower without hesitation.Any comment on that? BTW Banana republic is one of world Powerful country and yet not a 52th State of USA.
From Australian standards, the US is a corrupt, violence-ridden country.
