The usage is the royal “we and the royal “us”.
As in “We, the people” are the source of our own problems.
As evidence,
I offer the results of the last two presidential elections,
and all of the various grifters in both houses of congress.
It was the answer to many mysteries and questions
when I came to the realization that many of “my fellow Americans”
are simply a bunch of blithering idiots.
