Chris Christie Fires 'Stupid' and 'Deceitful' Staffer, Apologizes to New Jersey

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was unequivocal in his condemnation of the actions taken by some of his staffers last fall to exact political retribution by closing George Washington Bridge traffic lanes and causing major backups, but he continued to deny any prior knowledge of the plot in a press conference Thursday.

Christie began by apologizing to the people of Fort Lee and New Jersey, and said he would be traveling to Fort Lee later Thursday to repeat his sentiment directly to the most affected community.

"I am embarrassed and humiliated by the conduct of some of the people on my team," Christie said.

Christie said he fired [Deputy Chief of Staff] Kelly Thursday morning for lying to him and has asked Bill Stepien, his former campaign manager, to withdraw from taking over as New Jersey Republican Party chairman. Christie also said he advised against the Republican Governors Association – of which Christie serves as chairman – using Stepien as a political consultant.

No one will “talk.” Either Christie was clueless and didn’t know anything (incompetent for not finding out when so many red flags were raised) or he was totally behind the corrupt acknowledged actions of his staff.
Anyone fired that could “talk” knows they will be taken care of for being quiet. If in a year they are not financially in better shape, likely they were the ones calling the shots and should have been fired - but again Christie gains no points for hiding his head in the sand when he should have taken accusations seriously.

Like it or not, he’s off the hook on this one. Unless and until some more emails show up.

Christie's FOS....this woman operated in a manner she felt comfortable with. If he didn't give her the directive to do this, she at least did it with the feeling that in the atmosphere she operated, it was acceptable.

The fat slob endangered people’s lives and doesn’t owe up to it!

If he HAD a sense of decency, he would have resigned. Blaming others for his own screwups shows people Chris Christie’s true character.

To wit: the buck doesn’t stop with him. No way am I am going to vote for him and IF he is the GOP nominee in 2016, I intend to vote for either Hillary or Slow Joe, who are far more qualified!

Stick a fork in him; that RINO is well done!

If he were a Democrat he would deny everything and promote the staffers.

There s no way Christie did not know about this, no way. No way!
It is entirely possible that he did - but
He is a bully. He needs to resign!
Yeah, and his Lieutenant Governor, too - I’m sure the Democrats can find someone pure as the wind-driven snow to fill in. Let’s see, Jim McGreevy resigned before his term was up, maybe he could come back in. And then there is Jon Corzine - he could probably buy the governorship again, with the money Goldman Sachs stole from investors on his watch. And the last I knew, Robert (“the Torch”) Torricelli was still out of work - he wanted to run for reelection to the Senate, and Bill Clinton told him to step aside for the good of the party. He’s owed.

Maybe the Democrats could expand their search nationally - Bill Clinton isn’t doing anything, and his administration had Craig Livingstone committing somewhere north of 500 counts of a felony accessing fraudulently acquired FBI dossiers on former presidential appointments by Republican presidents (and even some Democrat appointees, accessed arbitrarily in alphabetical order). Craig Livingstone “was fired” - note the passive voice - and Clinton wouldn’t acknowledge or assign responsibility even for firing him. Since that would have acknowledged who hired him, and Livingstone was too toxic even for that.

And then there’s Obama, systematically and illegally inconveniencing citizens, even picking directly on veterans - and even visiting Asian tourists at a National Park - during the “Republican shutdown” which he orchestrated.

This was all very petty and despicable. I live in NJ, it’s great to know that those running the show (paid for by OUR money) think my life and time are basically valueless. We’ve got enough criminals here to provide that function.

This is a major screw-up, and I wouldn’t count on it just going away, regardless of who he fired, etc. Sure, if he was a Dem it would be different, but maybe not for the public even if it was for the press.

I just wrote a sarcastic reply to someone who declared that Christy should resign, comparing “bridge gate” to recent Democrat lash ups McGreevey, Corzine, Torricelli, and - nationally - Clinton’s FBI Filegate and Obama’s “Republican” shutdown barricades of national monuments and parks to intentionally and with malice aforethought inconvenience the public.
But that is not to say that I even liked Christie as a potential national candidate. Before this, he seemed sorta OK, as NJ politicians go - but not someone you want representing the face of your country. Maybe Lonnigan woulda been better, if you could have nominated and elected him (I’m in PA).
At best, Christie had close associates who thought that by inconveniencing the public they were pulling a cute political trick. Ronald Reagan wouldn’t have touched anyone like that with a ten-foot pole - but where is the tree that grows Ronald Reagans??? Wasilla?
