What happens when jobless benefits are cut? North Carolina may offer some clues?
Capitol Report ^ | January 8, 2014 | Jeffry Bartash

Last summer, North Carolina slashed the amount of cash it gave to people after they lost their jobs and the state also reduced the number of weeks they could receive benefits. Within several months, the unemployment rate fell a few ticks and by November it fell to a five-year low.

Similar though less dramatic declines occurred in Georgia and South Carolina after they made benefits less generous starting in 2012.

So there is possible additional proof that lowering the length of time citizens get generous benefits does lower employment. Of course, numerous critics suggest that this says nothing about whether or not decreasing the length of time of unemployment benefits actually does increase employment, these critics allege that most, if not all, of those who are counted as not unemployed anymore left the labor force entirely and are on welfare, living with relatives or in another state with more benefits.

Perhaps posters in North Carolina who have empirical evidence and can see what the economy there first hand looks like can comment on this as well.

That "uptalking" that everyone hates is starting to bleed over to writing, as well. I've seen people starting to do this in emails and such.

Doesn’t hurt to have a republican governor, for a change, either.

Do you think said Republican governor has made significant, real improvement’s to North Carolina’s economy that can be readily seen by visiting the states major cities and towns?

It is just so unfair to make people go to work by cutting their unemployment benefits. They will miss all their soaps on TV that they have become addicted to.

It cannot be seen by Democrat governors because their eyes are firmly averted to the left.

From the article: “What the data doesn’t tell us, however, is what happened to all the people no longer classified as unemployed. While some found a job, others may have retired, ended up on welfare, moved in with family members, sought disability payments or fled to a nearby state with better benefits. We just don’t know.”

That’s the closing paragraph. And it supports the notion that tracking ‘unemployment’ is only half the story. The rest of it is labor participation.

It the LSM would report BOTH, we would have a much better picture of national employment.

It’s quite possible that a significant portion of the drop in NC is due to people simply falling off the roles, which does not necessarily mean these folks went out and found work.

living with relatives or in another state with more benefits....

Or, in Mexico, via the process of self-deportation.

I acknowledged that in my comments, which is why I asked if anyone on the ground in North Carolina would somehow have access to other sources of info on the labor participation rate in NC since the long term benefits were shortened and reduced. I said from the start that there is naturally going to be some degree of speculation here without additional proof.

Does anyone have other info on this other than speculation, at least when it comes to NC and neighboring states?

The problem is borrowing from the state and the Feds. Stop that and you stop a lot of it. Get rid of commerce and the people in the senate who started this mess in the 20’s. I remember in the 60’s when the states started pushing for schools; etc to borrow from them. The dean of my school told them to go take a hike.

Perception often proceeds reality. I have more confidence now with a more pro business administration.

This is a little different but not really:

When John Engler was Gov. of Michigan, between 1991 and 2003, he managed to get some legislation passed that tested people on welfare and those found to be fit to work were taken off the welfare roles.

People who were fit to work found jobs or went back to school. A neighbor of mine, who had been on welfare and was kicked off, later told me that getting kicked off welfare was the best thing that ever happened to her. She went back to school and got a job.

Until she was kicked off welfare she never thought about working for a living. Imagine that.

If my lazy brother is any indication, cutting off benes will stop the months-long vacation and get the people frantically running around, looking for work until they find a job. Then they will grumble about having to take a job they didn’t want but they will have a job and be working.

Within several months, the unemployment rate fell a few ticks and by November it fell to a five-year low.

Wouldn't the people who saw their unemployment end fall off the reporting statistics? And wouldn't that in itself cause the unemployment rate to fall? Without having to file for benefits how else would the state know if they were still unemployed, employed, or had given up looking altogether?

Actually, that report helped a lot, the only thing it is missing is an explanation as to why the labor participation suddenly started dropping at the very beginning of 2013. I do wonder what could it to happen at that date.

It is just "common sense" (sorely lacking in the "Progressive Movement")!

Human nature dictates that one seek the greatest personal reward for the least personal effort! We are just like all others in the animal kingdom in this regard!

Anecdotally, all of us have observed this fact (only "Progressives" either dismiss it or just admire it as long as "others pay"!

In this country, the pilgrims with their "Mayflower Compact" quickly found this out! They quickly decided that all must work and reap the rewards of their own labor OR STARVE! Check out your basic history! "Utopian Societies" have always failed throughout history! We don't have to just observe the fate of communist and socialist societies in the past few decades!

As long as you can make "others" pay why not gleefully support the entitlements?

It is a rarity to encounter self-reliant individuals who refuse to accept their "freebies" these days!
